Azam FC lost ground in the Tanzania Mainland League race after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Ndanda SC on Wednesday.
With Simba SC defeating Kagera Sugar by a solitary goal, the Tanzania FA Cup champions needed a win to stop the gap from widening and stand a chance of winning the title by the end of the season.
It was Ndanda who took the lead after just 10 minutes owing to the slow start by their opponents. The hosts looked organized and attacked with every opportunity they got.
Azam fought hard but they could not get past the resilient hosts’ defence until concentration lapses allowed Andrew Shimchimba to score the equalizer and hand his team a point.
After Tuesday’s win, Wekundu wa Msimbazi took their tally to 59, 14 more than Azam while Ndanda remain 15th with 23 points.
In another top tier assignment, Alliance FC defeated Mwadui FC 4-1 to move 13th on the log.
David Richard was the star of the match, bagging a hat-trick for Mwadui with Sameer Vincent getting the other goal. The former scored his goals in the fifth, 18th and 83rd minutes with Sameer getting his goal with 10 minutes to go.
Tanzania Prisons and Mtibwa Sugar battled to a goalless draw.
