Hadjila Khelif of Algeria clinched Africa’s second victory in Women’s World Boxing Championships which entered the second day on March 17 in New Delhi, India.
Hadjila, a gold medallist in the Mediterranean Games and bronze medal winner in last year’s Africa Championships in Maputo, outpointed Russia’s Nadezhda Golube 5-0 in the lightweight division.
She was the only African winner in the second day of this most prestigious women’s boxing tournament while five other boxers from Africa fell by the wayside.
Tunisia’s lightweight Mariem Homrani lost 5-0 to Romania’s Andrea Marin, Kenya’s middleweight Elizabeth Akinyi went down 5-0 to Lin Chien-Yu of Taipei with two other Kenyans, lightweight Stacy Ayoma beaten 4-1 by Moldova’s Christina Chiper and light-welter Teresia Wanjiru losing 5-0 to India’s Shashi Chopra and Tanzania’s lightweight Beatrice Nyambega stopped in one minute 37 seconds of round one by India’s Jasmine Jasmine.
