Breel Donald Embolo came back to haunt his birth nation Cameroon in their World Cup Group G opener at the Al Janoub Stadium on Thursday.

Embolo, who was born in Cameroon 25 years ago didn’t celebrate after opening the scoring against them for Switzerland in the 48th minute as the Indomitable Lions lost their opening fixture 1-0 to Swiss at this year’s World Cup.

The Monaco forward migrated with his family to France before finally settling in Switzerland. He made his professional debut for Basel in March 2014 after graduating from the junior teams.

Embolo did not celebrate his goal against Cameroon

Embolo went ahead to win the Swiss Super League in all three of his first seasons before signing for Bundesliga outfit Schalke 04 for an initial €20 million. He shortly battled an injury that left him out of action for a long spell.

Embolo made his senior international debut in March 2015 and represented Switzerland at UEFA Euro 2016, the 2018 FIFA World Cup, UEFA Euro 2020 and the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Cameroon must produce decent results against South Korea and five-time winners Brazil to make it past group stages of the tournament.
