Equatorial Guinea shocked heavyweights Mali to reach the last eight of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon on Wednesday.

Custodian Jesus Owono was the star of the match that stretched into 120 minutes after he saved twice in the ensuing penalty shoot-out to earn Equatorial Guinea a momentous  6-5 win.

In what would have been another controvervsial moment in the tournament, the referee had indicated that Owono’s all-important save against Falaye Sacko’s spot-kick needed to be retaken because he the keeper had crossed the line.

But to the relief of Equatorial Guinea contigent, a VAR check showed Owono’s foot was still on the line.

Equatorial Guinea play Senegal next.
