MADRID, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) — Real Sociedad went three points clear at the top of La Liga on Saturday after a 1-0 win at home over Mallorca.
A last-minute goal from Real Sociedad youngster Julen Lobete gave all three points to the team from San Sebastian in a game of few chances.
Lobete received the ball outside the Mallorca penalty area and although his shot took a slight deflection which deceived Mallorca keeper Manolo Reina, the keeper should have probably done better with the shot.
The points were a reward for the perseverance of the home side, who were reduced to 10 men before halftime after defender Aihen Munoz was shown two yellow cards.
In the first 45 minutes Real Sociedad had struggled to break down a well-organized Mallorca side, but the visitors failed to take advantage of the extra man after the break and despite their timid attempts to attack, they gave the sensation they were happy with a draw, which Lobete’s late goal denied them.
The day’s other game saw Levante and Getafe draw 0-0 in a clash between two sides that have yet to win this campaign and who both sacked their coaches during the international break.
Javier Pereira made his debut as Levante coach and his side looked to be more defensive in outlook than under his predecessor Paco Lopez, while Getafe looked solid as Quique Sanchez Flores began his third term at the club.
Getafe will be happier with the result, although with just two points from nine games, they need to start winning sooner rather than later.
The remaining games will be played on Sunday and Monday, with FC Barcelona entertaining Valencia in the most attractive match still to be disputed.
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are not playing this weekend./
