The long wait is finally over as the Kenya Women’s Volleyball team squad was on Thursday named ahead of the World Championships slated for September 23 and October 15 in Poland and the Netherlands.

Malkia Strikers will on Saturday fly to Brazil for a two-month training camp in São Paulo in readiness for the big occasion.

The squad is mainly dominated by young players as Kenya rebuilds for the Paris Olympic Games in 2024. Trizah Atuka makes a comeback after missing past assignments due to injury.

The development comes a day after Kenya Volleyball Federation revealed that the Malkia Strikers were risking a suspension from  International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) should they have failed to participate in the forthcoming World Championships

Kenya Volleyball  Federation said that it had forwarded a 46 million shillings budget to the Ministry of Sports to foot the bill for their planned two-month High Performance Training in South America as well as build-up matches in Serbia and World Championships.

However, up until Wednesday there was no official communication from the Sports Ministry.

In a press briefing at the Moi International Sports Kasarani in Nairobi on Wednesday, KVF deputy chairman Charles Nyaberi pleaded with the government for urgent assistance before the country attracts the wrath of FIVB.

“FIVB have been kind to Kenya to give it chance to train at the highest level and to cater for their logistics in Brazil for the time they will be there and therefore it’s unfortunate that we are watching that opportunity pass by. We urge the government to come through for this team and more so the players who will have the chance to showcase their talent at that stage,”

“We only need air tickets, players and officials allowances and coronavirus tests funds. This is not too much to ask from the government considering our previous good working relationship,” he added.

Meanwhile, it is also reported that the team will unveil their sponsor on Friday before departing for Brazil a day after.
