Mbeya City have boosted their chances of playing in the Tanzania Mainland League beyond this season after a 3-1 victory over Coastal Union.

The match was scheduled for Sunday July 5 but the visitors failed to reach Sokoine Stadium on time as their van developed several mechanical problems. The Tanzania Premier League Board had no option but to push it forward.

It took the hosts just four minutes to get the opening goal courtesy of Absalom Chidiebele who capitalized on poor defending.

In the 33rd minute, the advantage was doubled by Rehani Kibingu to ensure the Green City Boys got a healthy 2-0 lead by half-time.

The Tanga-based visitors came back stronger after the break and managed to reduce the deficit in the 70th minute through Ibrahim Ame. It was a goal which gave them hope of getting at least a point.

However, it was not going to be the case as Peter Mapunda scored Mbeya City’s third goal with three minutes left to seal the win.

Despite the win, Mbeya remain in the relegation zone — 18th position — with 36 points, two below safety while Coastal Union are placed fifth with 48 points.
