Machakos governor Alfred Mutua in conjunction with Safari Rally five-time winner Carl ‘Flash’ Tundo began the process of unveiling the hyped Machakos People’s Park Formula 1 circuit on Wednesday.
The circuit is meant to act as a tourism hub for Machakos as well as improve road transport in the region as the facility will be convertible.
Speaking at the event, Mutua confirmed that the circuit will be ready for use by July with an organized motorsport competition.
“Today we have begun the process of unveiling a 4.5km circuit that will culminate in an extravaganza of RX Motorsport on the weekend of July 9th and 10th this year,” he said.
Mutua hosted the motoring fraternity and sponsors to discuss the circuit and the team work to make the motor sport event a success.
The Machakos County chief further revealed that the circuit will be in similar appearance as the famous Singapore and Melbourne circuits and will be used for all types of motor sport.
“The circuit will be like the Monaco or Singapore or Melbourne circuits that will be roads for normal city transport but blocked and converted into circuits when needed.
“The circuit will be used for all types of motorsports including motorcycle racing. There is a lot of money in tourism and especially in sports and motor sports,” Mutua added.
Meanwhile, Carl Tundo is the country’s most successful rally driver with an enviable record in motorsport. Tundo became the first and only Kenyan to win an Intercontinental Rally Challenge (IRC) round in 2009.
He has been setting and smashing the country’s motorsport records alongside his long term co-driver Tim Jessop whom they have worked together since 2002.
Tundo, the son of renowned Kenyan rally driver Frank Tundo, has competed twice in the WRC Safari Rally in 2002 and in 2021.
