Cody Gakpo and Davy Klaassen scored late to hand the  Netherlands a 2-0 win against African representatives Senegal in their opening Group A match of the 2022 World Cup on Monday.

Gakpo headed home a Frenkie de Jong’s clinical cross in the 84th minute before Klaassen scored from close range deep into stoppage time to condemn the Lions of Teranga to a defeat at the Al Thumama Stadium.

Following the outcome, Ecuador and Netherlands are now joint leaders in Group A after both ends grabbed 2-0 wins in their respective openers over Qatar and Senegal respectively.

In the next group A fixtures, the Dutch will take on Ecuador in their second group game on Friday, November 25 while African champions Senegal will face Qatar earlier the same day.

Group A winners will face the runners-up from Group B that comprises England, Wales, USA and Iran. The runner-up in Group A will face the winners of Group B.

Senegal will have to win all their remaining fixtures against Ecuador and Qatar to keep their round of 16 hopes at the event alive.
