LAGOS, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) — Nigeria recorded the first victory at the ongoing International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) Under-19 Boys Volleyball World Championship in Tehran, Iran by winning 3-2 against Cuba on Wednesday.
Nigeria won the first and second sets 25-10, 25-20 to take the match to 2-0 before the Cubans fought back to win the third and fourth sets 25-22, 25-20 to level at 2-2.
Nigeria secured a 15-13 win in the fifth set, clinching the game at 3-2 and enabling Nigeria to hope for placement between 13th and 14th in the classification.
Musa Nimrod, president of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, said: “I am happy Nigeria finally recorded its first win at the championship today. This shows that there is hope for Nigerian volleyball. The boys played with their heart, mind, and hands, which eventually led to the win in the fifth set,” Nimrod said.
“Two years ago, we finished in the 14th position in Tunisia, and I am charging them to win their last match and surpass the previous record set by their seniors,” Nimrod said.
