Earlier in the day, around 5,300 participants – the highest number in its history – set out to take on either the full marathon, half-marathon, 10km or kids’ 1 mile distances, as the Wellington Marathon celebrated its 35th anniversary.

Home runner Sam McCutheon dominated the men’s full marathon in 2:30:09 while his compatriot Lisa Brignull won the women’s race in 3:07:39.
