Rwanda volleyball official has been nabbed over ‘forgery’ as the Rwanda Investigation Bureau probes eligibility of four Brazilian players
The Rwandan government has apprehended the senior official of the country’s volleyball body just two days after the conclusion of the Africa Nations Championship staged in Kigali.
Jean de Dieu Bagirishya, the second vice President of Rwanda Volleyball Federation (RVF), was arrested Tuesday over forgery.
Bagirishya is linked to an embarrassing incident that saw the Rwanda women’s volleyball team disqualified from the just concluded championship that was won by Cameroon.
Cameroon beat Kenya in the finals.
Rwanda who were to play Kenya in the semi-final were kicked out of the competition for fielding four ineligible players.
The Brazilian quartet played for Rwanda in the preliminary round of matches even though their request for a change of citizenship had not been approved by CAVB.
With Rwanda out, Kenyan thus played Morocco whom they beat by straight sets 3-0 (25-12, 25-21 and 25-11) only to lose to Cameroon in the final.
The finalists will represent Africa at the 2022 World Championships. This will be the first time that Africa will be represented by two teams on the global stage.
Bagirishya who was in charge of operations.
“He is suspected to have used forged documents in exercising his functions,” he said without offering details,” a spokesperson for the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) was quoted by the New Times.
“Investigations continue to establish the role of other federation members.”
Rwanda hosted the Africa Nations Championship for the first time in history at the newly built Kigali Arena.
It is not yet clear whether the team’s head coach Paulo De Tarso Milagres, himself a Brazilian, was aware of the ineligibility surrounding some of his players and whether the investigation will be narrowed down to the entire technical bench.- Advertisement -
