Shakhtar Donetsk and Celtic played to a 1-1 draw in  the UEFA Champions League, as Mykhaylo Mudryk’s stunning shot canceled an early goal from the visitors on Wednesday.

Ivan Jovicevic’s men sought to continue their momentum after smashing RB Leipzig 4-1 in the first round, but Celtic made a perfect start.

The visitors dominated from the beginning and were rewarded in the 10th minute. A fast counterattack allowed the Scottish team to break the deadlock as Sead Haksabanovic found Reo Hatate in the penalty area. The Japanese crossed the ball and Shakhtar midfielder Artem Bondarenko, who tried to save his team with a tackle, put it into his own net.

The hosts responded in the 29th minute when left-back Yukhym Konoplya delivered a through-ball to Mudryk. The 21-year-old Ukrainian kept the pressure with a good left-foot finish past the goalkeeper. Shakhtar took the initiative for a while but Celtic defended well until the end of the first half.

After the break, both teams tried to find a decisive goal. In the closing stages, Celtic were more dangerous but Daizen Maeda and Georgios Giakoumanis missed the target from good positions.
