Australian Open serves up monumental challenge for local authorities

Australian Open serves up monumental challenge for local authorities

SYDNEY, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) — Australian authorities have announced stringent protocols to cope with the risk of Covid-19 during the upcoming Australian Open, coinciding with at least two infections being reported at a qualifying event in Doha.

Tennis Australia confirmed to Xinhua on Tuesday that two players, named in media reports as American Denis Kudla and Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo, had tested positive and been withdrawn from the tournament.

The news further highlighted the monumental risk posed by international sporting events in the age of Covid-19 and the threat to Australia’s so far largely successful virus suppression.

Australia reported six locally acquired cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday, while the city of Melbourne, which will host the Australia Open, recorded zero.

Authorities in Melbourne said that when the 1,200 tennis players, officials and support people begin arriving for the event from Thursday, they will be subject to the tightest quarantine arrangements in the world for a tennis tournament.

“We are assuming that every single tennis player that arrives and their officials has the potential to be positive,” Victorian Minister for Police and Emergency Services Lisa Neville said. “We have put in place the strongest, the strictest rules that apply for tennis across the world.”

Three major hotels in Melbourne have been refitted to house the players and staff as they undergo a two-week quarantine to stop the virus from spreading into the Australian community.

Non-players and staff will be subject to the same rules as overseas travelers returning to Victoria, meaning two weeks’ quarantine within a hotel room. However, players and support people who are “essential to player preparation” will be able to leave their hotel rooms for up to five hours a day for training.

To minimize public health risks, dedicated quarantine training venues have been set up, including access to gyms, physiotherapy, and nutritionists. These areas will be treated as their own “quarantine bubbles.”
Access to training will be available from the second day of players’ quarantine periods and only after players and support people have returned a negative test for Covid-19.

A small army of specialist staff will manage infection control throughout the process, including 615 Resident Support Officers at hotels, 210 Event Support Officers at the training sites, and 296 Covid Marshals who will monitor players and support people as they travel to and from quarantine hotels.

University of Queensland epidemiologist Linda Selvey told Xinhua that due to Australia’s relatively low Covid-19 rates, the biggest risk was of the virus being brought in from overseas and spreading amongst players and support staff or to the broader population.

“The biggest risk to the general population is not necessarily on the playing field but what the players do when they’re not on the field, such as attending restaurants, entertainment, or even in their hotels (hotel cleaners, etc.),” Selvey said.

“The quarantine/bubble policy is an important measure to reduce the risk of transmission to the general public from the players, but it doesn’t necessarily prevent transmission between players or players and umpires.”

Whether spectators are allowed at the Australia Open will depend on case numbers in Victoria at the time. A recent cricket match between Australia and India was allowed to be played in front of up to 30,000 fans per day at the 100,000 person capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground.

In a statement from the Australian Medical Association to Xinhua, Federal President Dr. Omar Khorshid said that if rates of community spread in Victoria were resolved at the time of the tournament, it might be safe to have limited numbers of spectators attend. However, he explained that “social distancing, good hygiene, and crowd control will be vital.”

“There is clearly a lot of planning going on regarding the international players and their teams — those plans must be executed perfectly to ensure the safety of all concerned,” Khorshid said.

Spectator behavior at the event will also be closely monitored; however, due to the virus’s nature, any large group poses a risk to public health. “It would be difficult to stop spectators from singing or shouting, which we know are important ways of transmitting the virus as that seems to be part of the fun of being a spectator,” Selvey said.

Having been through an outbreak in August last year and subsequent three-month lockdown, Melbourne officials are keen to see the city return to hosting world-class events — even if the situation demands unprecedented measures to keep it safe.

“The Australian Open is an iconic Melbourne event and while we’re excited to welcome the international tennis community back to Victoria, these rules have been developed to keep both participants and the community safe,” Neville said.

World’s best players to contest at Australian Open 2021

World’s best players to contest at Australian Open 2021

SYDNEY, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) — World’s best tennis players, including WTA No. 1 Ash Barty and eight-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic will lead the fields at the upcoming Australian Open 2021 scheduled at Melbourne Park from February 8 to 21.

According to a press release from Tennis Australia on Thursday, a total of 104 players received direct entry into the men’s and women’s singles main draw and a further eight were awarded wildcards, while 16 places will be determined at the qualifying rounds held from January 10 to 13 in Dubai and Doha respectively.

In the entry list unveiled, Big Three and the next generation of young guns such as new U.S. Open champion Dominic Thiem and this year’s ATP final winner Daniil Medvedev will compete for the Norman Brooks Challenge Cup, while Barty, Serena Williams, two grand slam champions Naomi Osaka and defending Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin will compete for the women’s singles.

“We are looking forward to welcoming the world’s best players to Melbourne and what promises to be a spectacular Australian Open following a year of disruption on a scale none of us has ever experienced before,” Australian Open Tournament Director Craig Tiley said in the press release.

“Although the Australian Open will look a bit different to previous years, the safety of everyone is our top priority. We have the opportunity to stage a very safe, and happy Slam, and give the players the experience of competing in front of crowds again, something they’ve missed for most of this year.”

Australian Open 2021 will feature singles, doubles and wheelchair competitions.

Qualifying matches will be held offshore, with the women’s event taking place in Dubai and men’s qualifying in Doha. The Junior Championships will be postponed until later in the year.

All players are scheduled to arrive in Australia from January 15 and undertake mandatory quarantine for 14 days.

Three major Australian golf events canceled due to Covid-19

Three major Australian golf events canceled due to Covid-19

SYDNEY, Oct. 16 (Xinhua) — The Australian golf industry announced on Friday three premier tournaments of the summer have been canceled due to Covid-19.

The Australian Open, Australian PGA Championship, and Women’s Australian Open, which were scheduled to take place in February 2021, will not go ahead because of the global pandemic.

It will be the first time since 1945 that the men’s Open will not have been staged. The PGA of Australia, Australian Ladies Professional Golf (ALPG) and Golf Australia acknowledged the “unprecedented blow” for Australian golf in a joint statement.

“It’s unprecedented and a real blow for Australian golf and its fans,” PGA of Australia chief executive Gavin Kirkman said. “We have collectively spent months in exhaustive consultation with all relevant authorities and our sanctioning partners to try to find a way to stage all three events safely and at that world-class level … But even with multiple contingency plans, it has reached a point where decisions have to be made and this, regrettably, is the one we’ve had to take.”

The Australian Open and Australian PGA Championship were originally slated for a late November and early December window respectively. Both events were postponed in recent months in the hope that a late-summer time slot would buy time to host the tournaments. However, the impacts of COVID-19 in assembling international fields and ensuring the safety of players and spectators have eventually forced the decision.

“On the advice of relevant domestic government authorities and, with consideration for the global nature of our fields and partners, the call was made with the health and wellbeing of the golfing community as the priority, ” Golf Australia chief executive James Sutherland said.

“The events rely on significant support from players and tours around the world, so given current quarantine restrictions, we believe the field strength of all three events would be severely compromised.”
