Pele hospitalised over swelling and heart failure

Brazilian football legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known as Pelé is hospitalised owing to reported general swelling and heart failure issues, with chemotherapy for his cancer condition not working.

According to the Daily Mail, the 82-year-old is finding it hard to eat with his wife by his side for tests in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Pele, who is battling metastatic cancer, was taken to Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo by his wife Marcia Aoki on Tuesday for examination in bad condition.

The medical staff at the health facility confirmed that the football icon suffered anasarca (general swelling), an edematous syndrome (general edema) and identified ‘decompensated heart failure’, a condition that limits the heart to function.

Further, it is also said that Pele’s chemotherapy treatment is no longer working. Besides that, Pele was as well diagnosed with mental confusion and developed restlessness in hospital. He was scheduled to undergo several tests on Wednesday.

Pele is named among the greatest footballers of all time and holds the record of only player to have won three World Cups with Brazil.

Pele’s daughter Kely Nascimento has said there is no need for alarm in her father’s  condition.

She posted on Instagram: ‘Lots of alarm in the media today concerning my dad’s health. He is in the hospital regulating medication.

‘There is no emergency or new dire prediction. I will be there for New Year’s and promise to post some pictures.’

Pele scored a record 655 goals in 700 club career games, while he he found the back of the net 77 times in 92 caps for Brazil.

Pele was admitted for six days last year and underwent surgery to remove a tumor in his colon before he shared his improvement journey on social media.

‘My friends, thank you very much for the kind messages,’ he wrote on Instagram.

‘I thank God for feeling very well and for allowing Dr Fabio and Dr Miguel to take care of my health.

‘Last Saturday I underwent surgery to remove a suspicious lesion in the right colon. The tumor was identified during the tests I mentioned last week.

‘Fortunately, I’m used to celebrating great victories alongside you. I will face this match with a smile on my face, a lot of optimism and joy for living surrounded by the love of my family and friends.’

Brazil has since qualified for this year’s FIFA World Cup round of 16 in Qatar. The Samba Boys are hunting for their sixth World Cup title in the Arab world.
