Quick contract renewals to Jones, Young and Smalling leave United dressing room divided

Quick contract renewals to Jones, Young and Smalling leave United dressing room divided

Manchester United’s dressing room is divided over the club’s contract policy after English players all benefited from renewal unlike foreign players.

Reports say some of the players have been left wondering why Ashley Young, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have all signed fresh terms at Old Trafford since Christmas despite disappointing performances.

United have continued to play hard ball over David De Gea’s demands to match highest earner Alexis Sanchez whilst Ander Herrera and Juan Mata have also failed to agree new deals despite having better season compared the English trio.

Some members of the United dressing room feel the English trio are undeserving of their new contracts considering the approach towards other squad members from the club in recent months.

Despite being limited to just 24 appearances this season due to injury problems, Jones penned a new four-and-a-half year deal in February.

That came just two months after fellow defender Smalling agreed to stay at the club until 2022, whilst Young has also been given a one-year contract extension.

Pundits have questioned manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer bid to revamp United squad after the reent dealings.

A section of United fans were left unhappy after the club failed tie down Herrera and Mata, but quickly gave  Young, Jones and Smalling new deals.

Solskjaer must field mobile Lingard, Martial in CL return leg to get positive result at Nou Camp

Solskjaer must field mobile Lingard, Martial in CL return leg to get positive result at Nou Camp

If Ole Guynnar Solskjaer is to give United the best possible chance of making it into the semi-finals, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard will have to start in the return leg at the Nou Camp.

The two have had fitness issues since the first game against PSG and that is perhaps why they were restricted to cameo roles against the Blaugrana.

With Martial and Lingard on the bench until 68th and 74th minute respective introductions, Solskjaer’s side sorely lacked penetration in the first leg at Old Trafford.

There was a half-chance for substitute Martial in the second half but on the whole United weren’t nearly as impressive in attack as they were at the back.

That will mean the Norwegian making two big decisions regarding senior players in order to maintain the balance in the team.

United started with a back three on Wednesday night but if Rashford, Martial and Lingard were all to start in Catalonia, a back four would be the only option.

Ashley Young has struggled of late and Dalot’s impressive showing on the left flank, his wayward header aside, hopefully convinced Solskjaer of the merits of starting the Portuguese at right-back in Spain.

Martial, meanwhile, was more threatening in his 22 minutes on the pitch than Lukaku was in his 68. But does Solskjaer have it in him to drop Lukaku, one of United’s heroes in Paris?

Solskjaer’s appointment was made permanent because the clubs believe he is capable of making big decisions. He’s got two to make next week.

Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez linked up in the build-up to the game’s only goal but their overall influence on proceedings was limited.

Smalling told Messi to ‘bring it on’ on Tuesday and the Argentine didn’t rise to the challenge, while Suarez’s contribution beyond his header that Luke Shaw fortuitously turned into David de Gea’s goal was minimal.

At the end of the night, the overwhelming feeling among United’s supporters was one of regret.

Barcelona, for all the superstar players they had on show, weren’t at the races and a genuine chance for Ole Solskjaer’s men to record another statement win had been missed.

UNITED BOOST: Rojo set to return to first team training as Solskjaer pushes for top-four finish

UNITED BOOST: Rojo set to return to first team training as Solskjaer pushes for top-four finish

Marcos Rojo is set to return to first-team training this week in another boost for Manchester United.

The Argentine defender has been out of the squad since December with a mystery injury.

Rojo, 28, picked up the problem during the Champions League clash away at Valencia during the middle of the festive period.

The ex-Sporting Lisbon ace has been given the go-ahead to resume ball work over the next few days.

Interim boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will not rush Rojo back to first-team football after what happened during the Arsenal game at Old Trafford where he was thrown into the team immediately, but he will have his workouts intensified.

“Rojo will be back in training in the next 24 hours or so but a firm comeback date isn’t set,” sources from Old Trafford told The Sun.

“He is running and will now start ball work. He won’t be rushed back but it’s another boost for the squad.”

Chris Smalling and Captain Antonio Valencia have shaken of injuries and will be back soon. Despite not featuring during the Leicester City match, Smalling is up and running and could be in contention to return against Fulham on Saturday if called upon.

Rojo signed a new deal last year but has been ravaged by injuries over the last couple of seasons.

United takes on Fulham in the early kick-off on Saturday.
