Leverkusen move 4-1 past Frankfurt in German Cup’s 2nd round

Leverkusen move 4-1 past Frankfurt in German Cup’s 2nd round

BERLIN, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) — Ten-men Bayer Leverkusen came from behind to ease past Eintracht Frankfurt 4-1 to progress into the round of the last 16 on Tuesday.

The hosts ensured a perfect start on the road as they needed only six minutes to open the scoring after Amin Younes finished off Andre Silva’s square pass from inside the box. The opener was a wake-up call for Leverkusen as Nadiem Amiri came close and tested Frankfurt goalkeeper Kevin Trapp six minutes later.

At the other end of the pitch, Silva had the chance to double Frankfurt’s lead moments later, but Leverkusen custodian Lukas Hradecky defused the dangerous effort. Both sides continued to trade attacks, but it was a handball penalty that restored parity for Leverkusen as Lucas Alario overcame Trapp from the spot in the 27th minute.

Leverkusen increased the pressure and reaped a promising chance in the dying minutes of the first half when Wendell’s hammer from 23 meters forced Trapp into the action.

After the restart, Frankfurt grabbed a better start into the second half as Aymen Barkok’s deflected shot challenged Hradecky. The goals were scored at the other end of the pitch, though, as Kerem Demirbay’s free-kick into the box allowed Edmond Tapsoba to turn the tide with a header four minutes into the second half.

Leverkusen should have added more goals to its lead, but neither Demirbay nor Moussa Diaby could beat Trapp despite good opportunities.

The “Werkself” eventually took the wind out of Frankfurt’s sails with 67 minutes played as Amiri’s through ball found Diaby, who tapped home to lead 3-1. Peter Bosz’s men had to continue with ten-men from the 73rd minute.

Still, they made it four as Diaby completed a counterattack to seal the deal in the 87th minute.

With the result, Bayer Leverkusen clashes with fourth division outfit Rot-Weiss Essen in the round of the last sixteen on February 2. Meanwhile, the “Eagles” will have to focus on the Bundesliga.

“We did not start very well into the game. We had to fight to gain a foothold into the match, and that is what we did. It was important that we came back today,” Bayer Leverkusen head coach Peter Bosz said.

Real Madrid complete £62 million deal for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Jovic

Real Madrid complete £62 million deal for Eintracht Frankfurt striker Jovic

La Liga giants Real Madrid have completed their first signing of the season with Eintracht Frankfurt striker Luka Jovic joining in a £62million deal.

The forward will join the Real on a five-year contract, pending a medical, after the two clubs agreed terms on a transfer.

The £62m fee is the largest amount Real have ever paid for a striker.

The Serbian striker has become one of Europe’s most coveted forwards and a look at his exploits for the Eagles makes it clear why. In 32 Bundesliga games in 2018/19.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s sporting director Fredi Bobic said Jovic  will be a big loss for the club.

“His explosiveness and scoring skills have impressed throughout Europe and we’ve benefited not only from his goals over the past two years,” Bobic said.

“But for us it was clear that there is a financial threshold. For Eintracht Frankfurt this is a good and important transfer. We wish Luka only the best for his future,” he said.

“He has the best qualifications for a great career. And we are proud that we were able to support him along the way.”

He scored 17 goals and produced six assists. Add in the 10 in 14 UEFA Europa League outings and you get the drift. However, those are just the raw statistics which do not tell the full story of just how brilliant the 21-year-old is.

Manchester United, City join race to sign Frankfurt goal machine Jovic

Manchester United, City join race to sign Frankfurt goal machine Jovic

Manchester United have been linked with Eintracht Frankfurt goal machine Luka Jovic.

Jovic is expected to leave in the coming months following their failure to qualify for the Champions League.

The striker’s stock has risen exponentially during his two years in Germany scoring 36 goals in 75 competitive games for Eintracht Frankfurt, but according to the Serbia international himself, that return is no surprise.

The Serbian international  emerge as a name on the international stage this season scoring 17 times in the Bundesliga and scoring a competition-high 10 goals as Frankfurt reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Europa League.

The 21-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, but there has also been speculation linking him with a move to Man City or even Manchester United, despite their lack of Champions League football next campaign.

“From my experience in the Europa League, I would say that some other leagues in Europe are more suited to me and my way of playing football,” he told Die Welt.

“In terms of the physique, the Bundesliga is very demanding, but after the games against Chelsea or Inter Milan, I personally had the feeling that I could feel even better [playing] in the Premier League or Serie A.

“The way the teams play there suits me better.

“I’m looking forward to seeing my level compared to the best players in the world. One thing is clear: I want to succeed in my career.”
