Vihiga United have qualified for the 2020/21 Kenyan Premier League after defeating their hosts Kisumu-All Stars 5-3 in penalties after a 3-3 aggregate score.
The Western-based side traveled to Kisumu trailing 2-1 from the first leg and they needed a win to make a return to the top tier. However, the visitors had to dig deep to get maximum points to be promoted
It was the hosts who started the game on a high and were rewarded with a few minutes to halftime but moments after the break, Dennis Wafula leveled matters in favour of the visitors to give them motivation’
In the 55th minute, Patrick Okulo scored the second bringing the aggregate score to 3-3.
As such, penalties were used to get the winner and Kisumu All-Stars converted just three while the visitors scored five to ensure it ended 5-4.
“I am very impressed because that is what the players did. They played according to my plans and now we have a ticket back to the top-flight, we deserved to come back, playing in the lower league is not a joy for anyone and we are happy to make it up again,” Vihiga coach Sammy Okoth said after match.
His opposite number Andrew Aroka stated the visitors were handed space to do whatever they pleased with the ball.
“We won the first leg and I knew we could push them and win here again but it was not the case. We really never threatened them especially in the second half, we gave them room to control the ball and we have now been punished. It is back to the drawing board for us again now. “
