Haaland sets new Premier League record against Leeds United

Manchester City forward Erling Haaland scored twice against Leeds United to become the fastest-ever player to reach 20 Premier League goals.

The Pep Giardiola’s charges retained their second spot in the Premier League standings and narrowed the gap on leaders Arsenal to five points a deserved 3-1 win at Elland Road on Wednesday night.

Since arriving from Borussia Dortmund in August, it has taken Haaland 14 games to reach the 20 Premier League goals mark ,seven games faster than previous record-holder Kevin Phillips, who needed 21.

After reaching the landmark, the Norwegian told Amazon Prime: “I should have scored five!”

“I said to my team-mates I could have scored five and that’s the truth. That we win is the most important thing. Arsenal are at the top and we have to hunt them.

“I was at home on my sofa a bit mad that I wasn’t playing at the World Cup. I was a commentator in my own home about the World Cup but nobody was listening to me.

“I recharged my batteries and watching other people scoring and winning games at the World Cup motivated and irritated me. I’m hungrier than ever.”

Man City boss Pep Guardiola told Amazon Prime: “It’s job done. The second half was even more difficult than the first! We were exceptional in the first half but we wasted opportunities… but we didn’t concede a single chance against a side who has caused problems for Liverpool and Chelsea.

“It’s a big compliment for the guys after the World Cup. The two performances since coming back, against Liverpool [in the Carabao Cup] and today have been great.”

On Erling Haaland, Guardiola joked: “I’m so upset with the chances he missed! Catching Alan Shearer’s record is impossible! We’re delighted for how humble he is. Given the reputation he has and how tall he is, but his character is completely the opposite. He’s an exceptional guy with a very high work ethic. It’s a great threat for the opponent having him there.”

EPL roundup: Newcastle share spoils with Man City as Arsenal go top

Defending champions Manchester City lost their Premier League top spot to Arsenal after a thrilling 3-3 draw away to Newcastle United on Sunday.

Pep Guardiola’s side came back from 3-1 down to take a point, and while Newcastle will be disappointed not to have won, the result and performance shows how much it has improved under Eddie Howe.

Ilkay Gundogan opened the scoring for the visitors in the 5th minute, but Newcastle fought back with first Miguel Almiron and then Callum Wilson taking advantage of great work from Allan Saint-Maximin to make it 2-1.

It looked game over when Kieran Trippier scored a free-kick to put Newcastle 3-1 up, but within 10 minutes City leveled the scores thanks to Erling Haaland and Bernardo Silva.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was that neither side added a fourth goal.

Chelsea had a dreadful day at Elland Road as it was beaten 3-0 by a Leeds United side that looks vastly improved under Jesse Marsch.

Thomas Tuchel’s side got off to a bright start, but terrible error by keeper Edouard Mendy gifted the ball to Brenden Aaronson in the six-yard box in the 33rd minute and the American put the ball into the empty net.

Four minutes later, Rodrigo Moreno’s powerful header made it 2-0 for Leeds. and when Jack Harrison added a third with 20 minutes left to play Elland Road was jumping.

Chelsea struggled to deal with Leeds’ intensity and things got even worse with six minutes to play, when Kalidou Koulibaly was sent off for a second yellow card after pulling back Joe Gelhardt.

It was a bad day for West Ham United as well as David Moyes’ side lost 2-0 at home to go bottom of the table, as Brighton continues its excellent start to the campaign.

Alexis Mac Allister put Brighton ahead from the penalty spot in the 22nd minute, and although West Ham had chances to equalize, they failed to take them and Leandro Trossard made them pay in the 66th minute.

Arsenal won 3-0 away to Bournemouth to enjoy its best start to the season in 18 years and is the new leader.

The game was all but over by the 11th minute after Martin Odegaard twice took advantage of good work by Gabriel Jesus to make it 2-0, and William Saliba’s excellent third goal in the 54th minute rounded off a silky display by Mikel Arteta’s side.

Harry Kane nodded home a corner to score his 185th Premier League goal for Tottenham (beating Sergio Aguero’s record of Premier League goals for one club) to give his side a 1-0 win at home to Wolves.

Aleksandar Mitrovic’s 90th minute header decided a chaotic game Fulham’s way after it looked to have thrown victory away.

Marco Silva’s men led 2-0 after Bobby Cordova-Reid’s first-minute goal and Joao Palhinha’s header, but Brentford leveled thanks to an excellent strike from Christian Norgaard on the stroke of halftime and Ivan Toney’s 77th minute goal, before Mitrovic’s winner.

Wilfried Zaha scored twice as Crystal Palace enjoyed a 3-1 win at home to Aston Villa after falling behind to Ollie Watkins’ fifth minute goal.

Zaha equalized two minutes later and put Palace ahead just before the hour, before Jean-Philippe Mateta added a third with 20 minutes left to play.

Demarai Gray’s 88th-minute goal saved a point for Everton, who had fallen behind at home to Nottingham Forest when Brennan Johnson put the visitors ahead with 10 minutes left.

Che Adams netted after 68 and 84 minutes as Southampton came from behind to win 2-1 at Leicester City, who had gone ahead 10 minutes into the second half through James Maddison’s exceptional strike.

Manchester United faces Liverpool in a vital game for both sides on Monday night.

Everton fight back to survive relegation battle

Everton fought back from 2-0 down to beat Crystal Palace 3-2 at Goodison Park on Thursday night.

The victory means that Frank Lampard’s side are now safe from the drop, leaving Leeds United and Burnley to contest the last relegation spot.

Things had looked bleak for Everton when they trailed to a 21st-minute goal from Jean-Philippe Mateta and a second from Jordan Ayew 15 minutes later.

Michael Keane gave Everton a lifeline nine minutes into the second half after being given time to control a knockdown, and Richarlison leveled with 15 minutes to go.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin then sent the home fans wild with a diving header from Seamus Coleman’s free-kick with five minutes left to play, sparking jubilant scenes and a pitch invasion that will surely cost Everton a hefty fine.

Burnley moved out of the bottom three on goal difference over Leeds United after a 1-1 draw away to Aston Villa, who had beaten them 3-1 less than two weeks ago.

Ashley Barnes’ penalty on the stroke of half-time put Burnley ahead, but Emiliano Buendia leveled for Villa three minutes into the second half.

A win at home to Newcastle United on Sunday will now assure Burnley’s top-flight survival.

Finally, Chelsea and Leicester City drew 1-1 with James Maddison putting Leicester ahead in the sixth minute before Marcos Alonso equalized half an hour later.

Man City and Liverpool win in tight Premier League title race

Manchester City retained their Premier League top spot with a 4-0 win against Leeds United on Saturday to keep pace with Liverpool in the title race.

Naby Keita scored the only goal of Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United after 19 minutes. The midfielder made and scored the goal by himself. Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz and Sadio Mane all missed chances to add to Liverpool’s advantage in the second half.

That result piled the pressure on City in their evening visit to Leeds United, but despite a spirited display from Leeds, Pep Guardiola’s men took all three points.

Rodri’s glancing header put them ahead in the 13th minute and Nathan Ake doubled their lead 10 minutes into the second half after good work from Ruben Dias, before Gabriel Jesus made it 3-0 in the 78th minute.

Fernandinho rounded off the scoring in injury time to also help his side’s goal difference and leave Leeds firmly back in the relegation dogfight.

The only setback for City was that Ake had to leave the pitch with a physical problem shortly after his goal and has to be considered a doubt for Wednesday’s Champions League visit to Real Madrid.

Norwich became the first team to be relegated after Ollie Watkins’ 41st minute goal and an injury time finish from Danny Ings condemned them to a 2-0 defeat away to Aston Villa.

Watford are on the verge of joining Norwich in a quick return to the Championship as they were beaten by two late goals at home to Burnley.

James Tarkowski’s unlucky own goal looked as if it was going to end a run of 10 consecutive home defeats for Watford, but goals from Jack Cork on 83 minutes and Josh Brownhill just three minutes later gave Burnley their third win in three games.

The win lifts Burnley above Leeds and five points clear of Everton, and ramps up the pressure on Frank Lampard’s side who entertain his former club Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

Brighton are ending the season strongly with goals from Alexis MacAlister, Leandro Trossard and Yves Bissouma giving them a 3-0 win away to Wolves.

Crystal Palace banished any lingering relegation doubts with a fightback after conceding an early goal to Oriol Romeu. Second half strikes from Ebereche Eze and Wilfred Zaha saw Patrick Viera’s men to a 2-1 away win to Southampton.

Leeds United part ways with revered coach Marcelo Bielsa

Leeds United have been forced to take the difficult decision to part ways with one of the club’s most revered figures.

Oon Sunday the club sacked head coach Marcelo Bielsa in the wake of Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at home to Tottenham.

The defeat left Leeds just two points above the relegation zone after a run of five defeats from six games and a week which saw them concede 14 goals in three matches (4-2 vs Manchester United, 6-0 against Liverpool and 4-0 against Tottenham).

The decision ends Bielsa’s spell of nearly four years in charge at Elland Road, where he has become a hero after leading the club to promotion to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years and steering them to a ninth-place finish last season with some thrilling football.

However, injuries have bitten Leeds’ squad this campaign and only bottom of the table Norwich City have shipped more goals than the 60 conceded in 26 games by Leeds.

Former RB Leipzig boss Jesse Marsch is expected to be named as Bielsa’s replacement on Monday.

Leeds chairman Andrea Radrizzani said that sacking Bielsa was “the toughest decision I have had to make during my tenure at Leeds United, taking into account all the success Marcelo has had at the club.”

He said that thanks to Bielsa the “good times returned to Elland Road”, and that the Argentinian “changed the culture of the club and brought a winning mentality to us all.”

“However, I have to act in the best interest of the club and I believe a change is required now in order to secure our Premier League status.”

“Recent results and performances have not met our expectations. We find ourselves in a precarious league position and I feel now is the right time to bring in a new head coach, in order to have an impact in the decisive stage of the season,” commented Radrizzani.

Liverpool thrash sorry Leeds United

Liverpool narrowed the gap with Premier League leaders Manchester City to just three points behind after a thumping 6-0 win at home to Leeds United on Wednesday night.

Two penalties from Mohamed Salah and a close-range finish from Joel Matip put Liverpool 3-0 up at the break against a rival that, as usual, looked lively in attack and vulnerable in defense.

Sadio Mane netted a fourth for Liverpool in the 80th minute after Salah and Jordan Henderson combined to give the Senegalese forward an open goal.

There was still time for two more goals, as Mane netted his second and Liverpool’s fifth in the 90th minute from close range. Virgil van Dijk then added a sixth with a powerful header from a corner as his side sounded out a warning to Pep Guardiola’s side,

Watford coach Roy Hodgson had an unhappy reunion with his former club as Crystal Palace won 4-1 at Vicarage Road to deepen Watford’s relegation worries.

Although Moussa Sissoko quickly canceled out Jean-Phillipe Matete’s 15th minute opener for the visitors, Conor Gallagher continued his excellent form with a 42nd-minute effort to restore Palace’s lead and two late goals from Wilfried Zaha gave the final score a sheen that flattered the visitors.

Burnley gave their survival hopes a huge boost at the expense of Tottenham’s European ambitions, thanks to Ben Mee’s powerful header which gave them a 1-0 win at home to Antonio Conte’s side. The win is only Burnley’s third of the season but their second in two games, and leaves them just two points behind Newcastle United and Everton and three behind Leeds, who have played two more games.

LONDON, Jan. 10 (Xinhua) — Leeds United were victims of the biggest upset of the third round of the FA Cup so far when the Premier League side was beaten 3-0 away to Crawley Town, who currently play in League Two of English football.

Premier League strugglers Brighton needed a penalty shoot-out to get past League Two, Newport County in a game which saw Solly March put Brighton ahead in the 90th minute only for Adam Webster’s 98th-minute own goal to take the game into extra time.

Saturday’s games saw Manchester United beat Watford 1-0, while Liverpool beat a team made up of Aston Villa youngsters 4-1 on Friday night.

Leicester move second, Fulham out of bottom three

LONDON, Nov. 2 (Xinhua) — Leicester City moved into second place in the Premier League after a convincing 4-1 win away to Leeds United on Monday night.

The game always promised to produce entertainment and goals and that proved to be the case as Leicester opened up a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Harvey Barnes, after just two minutes, and Youri Tielemans, after 21.

Both of the goals were set up by Jamie Vardy, whose pace and aggression made him a real handful for the Leeds defense.

The home side reacted after the break with Stuart Dallas floating in a cross which evaded everyone including Kasper Schmeichel in the Leicester goal and Pablo Hernandez went close to an equalizer, before Vardy got his reward with a tap in after good work from James Maddison.

There was still time for Tielemans to add his second of the night, from an injury time penalty, to round off an emphatic win.

Earlier in the day, Fulham claimed their first win since returning to the Premier League as goals from Bobby Decordova-Reid and Ola Aina gave them a 2-0 triumph over West Brom.

Decordova-Reid opened the scoring with a 26th minute header and Aina doubled the lead with a 30th minute thunderbolt.

The win was enough to lift Fulham out of the bottom three at the expense of their rivals, who are still seeking their first victory after winning promotion last season.

The two matches end a round of games that saw Liverpool return to the top of the table with a 2-1 win at home to West Ham, while Gareth Bale’s first goal since returning to north-London helped Tottenham beat Brighton 2-1 to move into third place.
