CHAN: Burkina Faso coach upbeat despite slump over Mali

Burkina Faso coach Seydou Zerbo is still upbeat that his side will proceed to the quarter finals despite a shock 1-0 defeat to Mali in the opening match of the Africa Nations Championship in Cameroon Saturday.

A 70th minute header by Mali’s left-back Siaka Bagayoko at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium means that the Burkina Faso must beat Zimbabwe who lost to Cameroon by the same margin, and the hosts, if they are to progress to the next stage.

“It’s up to us to correct our mistakes in order to have good matches in the future and achieve our goal of qualifying to the second round,” Zerbo said in a post match interview.

“We have to think about the game against Zimbabwe which is very important to us. After that, we will focus on the last match against hosts Cameroon.”

Cameroon also needed a second half goal to kick off their campaign on a positive note.

Salomon Banga was the hero for the Indomitable Lions who needed a 72nd goal to see off a stubborn Zimbabwe at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium.

With Malia and Cameroon both tied on three points, the next match will be interesting for both teams in Group A.

“Against Cameroon, we hope to see a good match between two teams playing good football,” Mali tactician Nouhoum Diané was quoted by Cafonline.

Zdravko Logarusic whose Zimbabwean side fell in the first hurdle, is also upbeat that he will turn the tides when he faces Burkina Faso.

“This is not the end of the world. We will play two more games and we have every chance of securing a place in the quarterfinals. It’s up to us to study our mistakes and correct them before our next meeting against Burkina Faso.”

Day two of the action will pit Libya against Niger as Congo and DR Congo clash in the ‘Lingala Derby’.

2019 AFCON: Adama Niane expelled from Mali squad for slapping captain Diaby

2019 AFCON: Adama Niane expelled from Mali squad for slapping captain Diaby

The Malian Football Federation and coaching staff have decided to expel striker Adama Niane  after he allegedly slapped team captain Abdoulay Diaby.

According to various reports, RSC Charleroi forward Adama Niane has been expelled from his national team camp after he allegedly slapped fellow teammate and captain Abdoulay Diaby.

Mali already had their issues before the start the tournament, as the Mali Football Federation had to approve all of FIFA’s orders regarding corruption or they wouldn’t be able to participate in the 2019 AFCON.

According to Footmali, the altercation allegedly began when Mali national team players ordered a hairdresser to their hotel and once he arrived Diaby sat on the barber’s chair.

This didn’t please Niane who attacked his captain before slapping him.

The Eagles will face Tunisia with their reduced 22-man squad on June 28 at 4.30pm in the Suez Stadium.

They will enter the game with a lot of confidence following their 4-1 win over Mauritania in their opening game.

Sadio Mane inspires Senegal to beat Mali in International friendly

Sadio Mane inspires Senegal to beat Mali in International friendly

Sadio Mane and Moussa Konate came off the bench to score two late goals and earn Senegal  a 2-1 comeback victory over Mali in an international friendly which was played in Dakar on Tuesday night.

It was a show of substitutes as Mali midfielder Adama Traore was introduced just after the hour-mark and fired the visitors ahead in the 72nd minute.

But Mane led Senegal’s retaliation with an equaliser three minutes from time and 11 minutes after coming on for Sada Thioub.

Konate then completed the comeback two minutes into stoppage time to extend Senegal’s unbeaten run to six international matches.

After being beaten 1-0 by Colombia at the 2018 Fifa World Cup finals, Senegal have gone on to register a single draw and four victories in Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifying matches.Article continues below

The fine run of form has established the Teranga Lions one of the favourite nations win this year’s Afcon tournament in June.

Senegal coach Alou Cisse decided to bench regulars like Kalidou Koulibaly, Idrissa Gueye, Moussa Wague and Youssef Sabaly, who never tasted action while Mane and Konate were second-half substitutes.

Mbaye Niang, who struck a brace in last weekend’s 2-0 win over Madagascar in the final match of the Afcon qualifiers, was not part of the team on Tuesday.

The win over Mali saw Senegal extend their unbeaten run to six matches since losing to Colombia at the Fifa World Cup finals in June 2018.
