Marseille’s title chance fades after another slip-up at Monaco

Marseille’s title chance fades after another slip-up at Monaco

PARIS, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) — Marseille’s worrying form continued in Ligue 1 as Monaco came from behind to beat the runner-up of last season 3-1 on Saturday, handing a third successive league defeat to the southern France outfit.

Nemanja Radonjic put the visitor in front after 12 minutes while Guillermo Maripan and Aurelien Tchouameni scored in the second half to gift Monaco the lead before Stevan Jovetic sealed the victory through a penalty in injury time.

The win moved fourth-placed Monaco to only one point behind third-ranked Lyon, who travels to Saint-Etienne on Sunday.

Polish striker Arkadiusz Milik made his debut for Marseille from the bench after signing on an 18-month loan from Italian club Napoli but was unable to turn the tide for his team on the pitch.

Andre Villas-Boas’ side remained in sixth place after a string of bad results, winning only one game in the last eight league matches, but the Portuguese said he was confident his team will get out from the stuttering situation.

“There is no crisis. The mindset was good, the players were concentrated and focused. I think we’ll come through this because the guys are giving everything,” said Villas-Boas.

In the other action on Saturday, Youcef Atal netted the winning goal to help Nice pocket a 1-0 win at Lens.

The Algerian winger scored at the start of the second half but limped off only two minutes later with a hamstring injury after the goal. Enditem

Monaco climb out of League 1 relegation zone with crucial victory over Nantes

Monaco climb out of League 1 relegation zone with crucial victory over Nantes

Monaco climbed out of the Ligue 1 relegation zone on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Nantes on Saturday.

After failing to win at home all season until the start of February, Monaco managed back-to-back victories at the Stade Louis II as Gelson Martins fired in a Rony Lopes cross on 13 minutes.

AS Monaco recorded back-to-back home wins for the first time in Ligue 1 this season.

Portugal international Martins, also on target in last week’s 2-2 draw at Montpellier, has scored twice in three league appearances for Monaco following his arrival on loan from Atletico Madrid.

Leonardo Jardim’s side moved up to 16th and two points clear of Dijon in the relegation play-off place.

Marseille defeated Amiens 2-0 to record three straight wins for the first time this season and jump to fourth, six points behind Lyon in the final Champions League spot.

After failing to find the net in 10 matches for Nice this season, Mario Balotelli has found his goalscoring touch since for his new club Marseille.

Florian Thauvin put Marseille in the driving seat on the 19th minute at the Stade Velodrome before Balotelli swept in a second just six minutes later to help Marseille beat Amiems 2-0

The Italian appeared to have grabbed a second midway through the second half when he nodded in from a free-kick, but the goal was ruled out for offside following a VAR review.

“It’s much too early (to talk about the top three) with the start to the season we had,” said Thauvin.

Patrick Vieira’s Nice crashed to a heavy 3-0 loss at mid-table Angers but remain seventh.

Runaway leaders Paris Saint-Germain go to fifth-placed Saint-Etienne on Sunday, while Lille will target a sixth consecutive win at home to Montpellier.

Lyon overcame bottom side Guingamp 2-1 on Friday in their final outing before Tuesday’s Champions League last 16 first leg at home to Lionel Messi’s Barcelona.

Strasbourg thrash Monaco 5-1 to pile pressure on beleaguered boss Thierry Henry

Strasbourg thrash Monaco 5-1 to pile pressure on beleaguered boss Thierry Henry

Thierry Henry football managerial stint received a major dent after Strasbourg thrashed Monaco in a six-goal thriller to complicate Henry’s efforts to revive the team.

Monaco, who secured the services of Cesc Fabregas from Chelsea last week, were thrashed 5-1 at home to Strasbourg on Saturday evening.

The game got off to a terrible start for the hosts when debutant Naldo was sent off in the seventh minute after a VAR review indicated he had brought down Ludovic Ajorque as the last man.

It did not take long before Ajorque opened the scoring for the visitors with a header and Adrien Thomasson followed with another headed goal.

Radamel Falcao gave Monaco hope when he scored after racing through but Ibrahima Sissoko restored Strasbourg’s two-goal advantage with a stunning curled finish after Fabregas was dispossessed in his own box.

Ajorque dribbled through the Monaco defence to make it 4-1 and although Stefan Mitrovic was sent off for the visitors, they still managed to add a fifth through Youssouf Fofana in injury time.

The start of the Frenchman’s managerial career has been a true baptism of fire.

After 17 games, Henry has managed to secure just four wins, drawing the same number of matches and losing nine times.

Monaco have conceded 33 goals since Henry replaced Leonardo Jardim in October scoring 19 in return and have only managed to keep four clean sheets.

After 21 games, Monaco find themselves 19th in the league with 15 points. Only Guingamp, on 14 points, are currently lower than Henry’s side.

Fabregas, Cahill to make final Chelsea appearance against Nottingham ahead of moves

Fabregas, Cahill to make final Chelsea appearance against Nottingham ahead of moves

Cesc Fabregas and Gary Cahill could make final appearance for Chelsea against Nottingham Forest in FA Cup third round match at Stamford Bridge.

Fabregas will be out of contract at the end of the season with Monaco keen on signing the midfielder in January.

The 31-year-old Spaniard has struggled for first-team opportunities this season and has played just six times in the Premier League under manager Maurizio Sarri.

However, the Italian has expressed a desire for Fabregas to remain at Stamford Bridge.

“In this position we have only two players, Jorginho and Fabregas, so for me it would be really a problem without Cesc,” Sarri said.

Sarri wants David Luiz and Cesc Fabregas to sign new deals at the club with both contracts expiring at the end of the summer

“I want him to stay, I don’t know the final decision of Cesc and the club of course.

“And I think that in the market it’s very difficult to find a player with his characteristics.”

Cahill could also be making a farewell appearance for the club on Saturday, with a move to Fulham in the offing for the centre-back.

Fulham Claudio Ranieri had hoped to wrap up the loan switch for the 33-year-old this week in order for him to be available for their FA Cup tie with Oldham.

His plans were scuttled by Sarri who is desperate to give regular defenders like David Luiz a break after their hectic schedule over the festive period.

And that means keeping Cahill at the club for a few more days so he can line up for the Blues against the Championship club.

Thierry Henry appointed Monaco head coach

Thierry Henry appointed Monaco head coach

Thierry Henry has been appointed as the new Monaco head coach, replacing Leonardo Jardim, who was sacked earlier this week.

The 41-year-old has signed a three-year deal with the Ligue 1 side, and will be joined by Benfica U23 coach Joao Carlos Valado Tralhao and Arsenal academy coach Patrick Kwame Ampadu – who is the father of Chelsea’s Ethan Ampadu.

Following his appointment, Henry posted a statement on Instagram that read: “It is with great pride that I am delighted to announce that I have accepted the position to become the manager of AS Monaco FC.

“I was fortunate to receive some very attractive offers over the last few months but Monaco will always be close to my heart. Having started my footballing career with this great club, it seems like fate that I will now begin my managerial career here too.

“I’m incredibly excited to be given this opportunity but now the hard work must begin. Can’t wait.”

Henry also confirmed he will be leaving his role as a member of Roberto Martinez’s backroom staff with Belgium, adding: “It’s with great sadness that I must say goodbye to the Belgium national team.

“I have had an incredible two years helping Roberto Martinez coach this wonderfully talented group of players and watch them blossom into the great side they are today.

“I would like to thank the Belgium federation, Roberto, all the staff and players for making a Frenchman feel so welcome amongst all of you Red Devils!

“I wish you every success in the future and I’m sure there will be even greater things to come.”

Monaco reached the Champions League semi-finals and won Ligue 1 in 2016/17, but Henry joins with them languishing in 18th place after just one win from their opening nine matches.

The former Arsenal and France forward was linked with the Aston Villa job following Steve Bruce’s sacking last week, but that job eventually went to Dean Smith.

Henry – who will take up his new role on Monday – will be returning to familiar surroundings at Monaco, having begun his professional playing career with the principality side.

He left his role as a pundit with Sky Sports in the summer, saying he wanted to focus on his ambition of becoming a manager.
