ACCRA, July 26 (Xinhua) — Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has granted permission to the country’s women Under-20 and Under-17 national football teams to commence their respective training camps ahead of major competitions amid COVID-19 restrictions.
In his 14th broadcast to the nation here on Sunday to update the public on the government’s management of COVID-19, Akufo-Addo announced the authorization formed part of phase two measures of gradually easing COVID-19 restrictions in the country.
This gives the country’s national Under-20 and Under-17 women teams permission to go into camp to prepare for their international matches in September.
“Our female Under-20 and Under-17 national football teams have been given clearance to go into their respective training camps to begin preparations towards their FIFA and CAF-sanctioned international matches, which begin in September,” the president said.
Akufo-Addo urged the playing body, technical and management teams to adhere strictly to all the protocols issued by the government, CAF and FIFA against COVID-19.
He, however, announced that all other team and contact sports and competitive sporting events remain suspended until further notice.
The government of the West African country banned competitive sporting events as well as contact sports in March. The Ghana Football Association, upon the decision, cancelled the 2019/2020 league season after an executive council meeting on June 30.
