Former Manchester United midfielder Scholes resigns as Oldham manager citing frustrations

Paul Scholes has left Oldham Athletic after just seven games in charge of the League Two club.

The former Manchester United and England midfielder took over as Oldham boss on February 11, and leaves the club after just 31 days in charge at Boundary Park.

Scholes won his first match at the helm of his hometown club, but subsequently drew three and lost three games during his brief spell in charge.

The 44-year-old issued a statement, that read: ‘It is with great regret that I have decided to leave the club with immediate effect.

“I hoped to at the very least, see out my initial term of 18 months as the manager of a club I’ve supported all my life. The fans, players, my friends and family all knew how proud and excited I was to take this role.

“In the short period since I took on the role it unfortunately became clear that I would not be able to operate as I intended and was led to believe prior to taking on the role.

“I wish the fans, the players and the staff – who have been tremendous – all the best for the rest of the season and will continue to watch and support the club as a fan.”

Oldham issued a statement thanking Scholes, and saying a permanent replacement would be made as soon as possible.

The statement read: “Oldham Athletic Football Club can confirm that Paul Scholes has resigned from his position as first team manager with immediate effect.

“We would like to place on record our thanks to Paul for his efforts during his spell in charge of the club and would like to wish him well for the future.

“An update on the permanent replacement will be made as soon as possible.”

FA shocks: Minnows Newport bundles out Leicester as Fulham, Sheffield Utd also suffer defeats in hands of lowly ranked teams

FA shocks: Minnows Newport bundles out Leicester as Fulham, Sheffield Utd also suffer defeats in hands of lowly ranked teams

Newport County stunned 2016 English champions Leicester City 2-1 on Sunday to follow fellow fourth-tier side Oldham Athletic and minor league Barnet into the fourth round.

Newport  had led from the 10th minute but their dream appeared to have been snatched away when Rachid Ghezzal smashed in a late equaliser, only for Padraig Amond to score a late winner from the spot to bundle out Leicester.

This is  the first time since 1964 when Newport beat Sheffield Wednesday that the Welsh team are eliminating a side from a division above them.

Oldham came from a goal down to defeat Premier League side Fulham 2-1 away at Craven Cottage while minnows Barnet won 1-0 at four-times Cup winners Sheffield United.

Newport, who are currently 13th in League Two, frustrated Leicester before going ahead through forward Jamille Matt header when he met Robbie Willmott cross in the box.

Leicester broke through in the 82nd minute when Ghezzal hammered a vicious shot past keeper Joe Day and looked set to turn the tables on their opponents in the last minute before conceding a late penalty after Marc Albrighton handled in the box.

Amond stepped up calmly to send his penalty past Leicester second choice keeper Danny Ward who was once a teammate at Morecambe.

“He faced a few of my penalties in training so I was hoping he wouldn’t remember,” Amond said.

The FA Cup has lost some sheen in recent years but Oldham and Barnet, along with third-tier Gillingham who beat top-flight Cardiff City on Saturday, revived the magic.

Woking’s adventure ended in disappointment, however, as the sixth-tier club, the lowest-ranked survivors, succumbed 2-0 at home to Premier League Watford.

There seemed little chance of an upset along the Thames when Denis Odoi put Fulham in the lead in the second half, but Sam Surridge equalised from the penalty spot.

Fulham were awarded a soft penalty but Alexsandar Mitrovic, brought off the bench to take the kick, had his effort superbly saved by Oldham keeper Daniel Iversen.

Callum Lang then sent 4,000 travelling Oldham fans wild with a headed winner in the 88th minute.

Sheffield United were outplayed by their lowly opponents  Barnet for whom former Tottenham trainee Shaquile Coulthirst won it with a 21st-minute penalty after Richard Stearman brought down Ephron Mason-Clark.

“I am really proud of them,” Currie, who made more than 100 appearances for the club just north of London, said.

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City joined Manchester United, Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal in the fourth round with a romp.

Raheem Sterling scored early on and youngster Phil Foden’s first home goal for the club and Semi Ajayi’s own goal made the result a formality before halftime. Gabriel Jesus, Riyad Mahrez, Nicolas Otamendi and Leroy Sane completed the hiding.

Championship leaders Leeds United suffered a 2-1 defeat at Queens Park Rangers, third-tier Doncaster Rovers upset Championship side Preston North End 3-1, while Millwall beat Hull City 2-1.
