Getafe stun the league leaders
The first LaLiga Santander game of 2022 was Getafe vs Real Madrid and it was quite the encounter. The relegation battlers stunned the league leaders, winning 1-0 courtesy of an early Enes Ünal goal, handing Carlo Ancelotti’s side only their second domestic loss of the season. It was also Getafe’s first win over their capital city neighbours since 2012.
Puado and Ünal with the last and first goals
Espanyol’s Javi Puado scored the final LaLiga Santander goal of 2021 in his side’s 2-1 victory over Valencia, while Getafe’s Enes Ünal netted the first goal of 2022 in Los Azulones dramatic win over Real Madrid.
An unforgettable debut for Jofre Carreras
20-year-old Jofre Carreras made his LaLiga Santander debut in Espanyol’s win over Valencia and it was a memorable performance off the bench from the youngster, winning a penalty for his side’s equaliser and then assisting Puado’s winner.
Calleja out, Mendilibar in at Alaves
There has been a change in the Alavés dugout this week, with José Luis Mendilibar being hired to replace Javi Calleja. Mendilibar’s first game with his new club was a Basque derby against Real Sociedad and his side fought back to earn a 1-1 draw and a point.
Correa fires Atlético Madrid into fourth
Atlético de Madrid are back into the top four of the LaLiga Santander standings, courtesy of their 2-0 win over Rayo Vallecano on Sunday. Both of the Rojiblancos’ goals were scored by Argentine international Ángel Correa, his fifth and sixth goals of the domestic campaign.
Barcelona’s youngsters grind out a win in Mallorca
RCD Mallorca and FC Barcelona faced off on Sunday night for a match between two teams with several absences. Barça had to field a very young team, with seven players aged 23 or younger in the starting XI. They ground out an impressive 1-0 victory, with Luuk de Jong scoring the only goal of the game.
Barcelona announce the signing of Ferran Torres
The winter transfer window is about to open and Barcelona have already announced a signing, with Ferran Torres set to join from Manchester City. The up-and-coming Spain international came through the academy of fellow LaLiga Santander side Valencia, before spending 18 months in England.
Rafinha is back in LaLiga Santander
Real Sociedad have brought in Rafinha on loan from PSG for the rest of the 2021/22 season. This means the 28-year-old midfielder is back in the league where he has previously played for Barcelona and RC Celta.
Juanmi is the December Player of the Month
The December Player of the Month award has been announced and it has gone to Juanmi, who enjoyed an excellent end to 2021, scoring in each of the matches he played in the month of December, against Barcelona, Real Sociedad and Athletic Club. It’s the first time the Malaga native has picked up the award.
A new contract for Borja Iglesias
Borja Iglesias and Real Betis have reached an agreement for the striker’s contract to be extended, with his deal now running until 2026. Since arriving in summer 2019 from Espanyol, Iglesias has scored 23 goals for the club and helped fire them back into European competition. The announcement was made with the help of world famous caster and streamer Ibai Llanos, who appeared in a video on the club’s social media channels.
