Pound says Tokyo Olympics could be held without spectators

Pound says Tokyo Olympics could be held without spectators

TOKYO, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) — Dick Pound, the IOC’s longest-serving member, claims that the postponed Tokyo Olympic Games will be held in the summer, backtracking on comments he made two weeks ago.

Pound, 78, said on January 8 that he was not “certain” that the Tokyo Games would take place, in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

But in an interview with Kyodo news agency on Wednesday, Pound said the Olympics could go ahead without fans in attendance. “The question is, is this a ‘must-have’ or ‘nice-to-have.’ It’s nice to have spectators. But it’s not a must-have,” Pound told the Japanese news agency.

“Nobody can guarantee [that the Olympics will go ahead as planned]. But I think there’s a very, very, good chance that they can, and that they will,” he said.

An IOC member since 1978, Pound added, “And the bottom line, they say, is that it’s better to have the Games even if there are no spectators, than it would be to cancel them because there are no spectators.”

He said that the Olympics would not be postponed again and that if the Games cannot take place this summer, cancelation was the only other option.

“All the indications are that we should go ahead. There’s no reason why the Games can’t go on.”

IOC reaffirms commitment to host Tokyo 2020 this summer amid speculations

IOC reaffirms commitment to host Tokyo 2020 this summer amid speculations

BEIJING, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) — The International Olympic Committee (IOC) reiterated its confidence in the host of the Tokyo 2020 and reaffirmed the joint effort to host the Games in an e-mail interview with Xinhua on Monday.

Dick Pound, the longest-serving IOC member, told UK’s state broadcaster BBC on Friday that the Tokyo Olympic Games might not take place.

Doubts mounted later as a poll by Kyodo news agency revealed on Sunday that 80 percent of the surveyed believed the Tokyo Games, which has already been postponed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic, should be cancelled or postponed again.

When asked about the IOC’s comment on whether there will be a further postponement or cancellation, the organization’s spokesperson responded: “The IOC has full confidence in the Japanese authorities and the measures they are taking. Together with our Japanese partners, we continue to be fully concentrated and committed to the safe and successful delivery of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020 this summer.”

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga declared on January 7 a state of emergency for Tokyo and three neighboring prefectures to February 7, authorizing tougher measures to fight a resurgence in Covid-19 infections and promising to host a “safe and secure” Olympics as scheduled.

IOC vice president Yu Zaiqing told Xinhua on Friday that the IOC and its Japanese partners’ determination to host the Tokyo Games as scheduled remains unchanged. The postponed Tokyo 2020 is scheduled to be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021.

Japanese PM determined to host Tokyo Olympics amid Covid-19 worries

TOKYO, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) — Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said here on Monday that he is determined to host the Tokyo Olympic Games although the COVID-19 pandemic situation is worsening in his country.

Suga told a press conference that he will prepare for the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games with “determination” and take all possible measures against the infection and deliver “hope and courage” to the whole world.

He also said that his government would consider declaring a state of emergency for Tokyo metropolitan and surrounding areas, which are suffering the most in the past few weeks.

Tokyo Olympic torch relay to kick off in 100 days

Tokyo Olympic torch relay to kick off in 100 days

TOKYO, Dec. 15 (Xinhua) — The torch relay for the Tokyo Olympic Games will kick off on March 25, 2021, along almost the same route set before the Games was postponed.

The relay’s start point will still be the J-Village National Training Centre in Fukushima, which was hit hard by an earthquake and tsunami in March 2011.

The flame, lit in Olympia of Greece in March, will travel 121 days through 859 municipalities across all 47 prefectures before it arrives at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo on July 23 when the Games opens.

About 10,000 torchbearers will take part in the event. To mark the 100-day countdown until the start of the relay, a special illumination of the Tokyo SkyTree will take place later to see the landmark light up in Sakura and gold – the colors of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Torch.

Yukihiko Nunomura, vice director-general of the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee, told a press conference that COVID-19 countermeasures will be taken to ensure “everyone’s health is secure.” He added that the details of the countermeasures will be disclosed next February. Japan is suffering a third wave of COVID-19 pandemic, with 1,677 new confirmed cases reported on Monday, 305 of which were from Tokyo, the hardest hit city by the virus among Japan’s 47 prefectures.

Athletes might be penalized for violating Covid-19 code at Tokyo 2020

Athletes might be penalized for violating Covid-19 code at Tokyo 2020

TOKYO, Dec. 2 (Xinhua) — Athletes could be penalized for violating the Covid-19 code of conduct at next year’s Tokyo Olympic Games, Tokyo 2020 organizing committee CEO Toshiro Muto said.

According to an interim report released by Tokyo 2020, athletes at competition venues and the Olympic Village are required to follow a code of conduct, which will be “thoroughly implemented to restrict their scope and means of travel,” in addition to ensuring their strict adherence to basic infection countermeasures.

Muto told a press conference that the organizations and governments which set the rules will be responsible for deciding what penalties will be given to those who violate the rules.

“We believe that Tokyo 2020 will undertake a significant role,” he said.

“This is not a law but we need to ask these people to be careful. We will create a system that allows the team leaders or representatives of the athletes to provide precaution measures.

“If the situation is not addressed, then we will decide what penalty will be enforced,” he said.

Athletes are asked to stay in the Olympic Village as little as possible, not take public transportation or go out shopping or sightseeing.

They are also required to take Covid-19 tests every four to five days even if they do not show symptoms, said the interim report, which was presented after the sixth coordination meeting from a panel consisting of members from Tokyo 2020, the Japanese government and Tokyo metropolitan government.

Overseas fans are hopeful that they will be able to watch the games in Tokyo without having to be isolated for 14 days after entering Japan. But final decisions on this will not be made until next spring.

The Tokyo Olympic Games have been postponed by one year because of the coronavirus and will be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021.

IOC chief Bach pledges “safe” Tokyo Games

TOKYO, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) — International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach said on Monday that the Tokyo Olympic Games will be held under any circumstances the world will face next summer.

In a video message released by the Tokyo 2020 organizing committee, Bach told Chef de Missions of all national Olympic committees, “I am sure the question today in your mind is: will the athletes make their Olympic dream come true in 10 months from now?

In this regard, I can reassure you that we are working at full speed with our Japanese partners and friends to ensure safe Olympic Games that are fit for the post-corona world.” He added, “Tokyo continues to be the best prepared Olympic city. The health and safety of all concerned remain our top priority.”

“We are focused on developing a tool box of COVID countermeasures for every possible scenario,” he said, adding that “encouraging development of rapid testing and vaccines give us good reason for cautious optimism.”

“We are prepared for safe Olympic Games whatever conditions the world will be facing next summer,” he said.

Kenya to kick off Olympic Games preps, orders President Kenyatta

Kenya to kick off Olympic Games preps, orders President Kenyatta

Kenya’s preparations for the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games should be back on track, declared President Uhuru Kenyatta, Saturday.

While speaking during the re-opening of the 37-year-old Nyayo National stadium, the venue for the Kip Keino Classic, Uhuru gave a strong hint that sports may soon resume fully in Kenya.

“Some events have reopened but I want more efforts put in to ensure that major sporting disciplines are also re-opened,” said Kenya’s head of State.

“The Ministry of Sports should ensure that preparation for the Olympic Games is back on track.”

The East African nation suspended all sporting activities last March. So far, only non contact sports like athletics have since been expunged form the list.

Nyayo has been under renovation since 2017.

The second largest sporting facility in Kenya is now ready to host the Kip Keino Classic, named after Kenya’s legendary athlete and the first Kenyan to have won an Olympic medal, Kipchoge Keino.

This will be the first time that Africa will be hosting the World Athletics Continental Tour Meeting on African soil and a maiden major athletics event on the continent since the outbreak of the Coronavirus.

The Kip Keino Classic is pencilled for October 3.

The championship will have five core events in the gold meeting series – the 200m, 3000m steeplechase, triple jump, discus throw and hammer for both men and women.

Additionally, there will also be the 400m, 800m, 1500m and 5000m while the organisers have also included some national events to the local athletes who will have a chance to compete at the home soil.

IOC president Bach believes Tokyo 2020 “symbol of hope”

IOC president Bach believes Tokyo 2020 “symbol of hope”

LAUSANNE, July 23 (Xinhua) — With one year to go until the postponed Tokyo Olympic Games, International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach said in a video message that the Games will be a “symbol of hope” in the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Tokyo Games, originally scheduled to start on July 24 this year, were postponed for the first time in the Olympic history, to be held from July 23 to August 8, 2021.

“This milestone of the one year to go is a very significant one, for sport but also for the worldwide society. It can and will be the great comeback festival of sport to the international scene and we are preparing for this in the one year that remains for us to make these Olympic Games a real great festival of hope, of resilience and of solidarity,” Bach said.

“This Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 in 21 can, should and will be the light at the end of the tunnel that all humankind is in at this moment, we are living in a period of great uncertainty. Then at the end of this very difficult period for humankind, the Olympic Games can be a great symbol of hope, of optimism, of solidarity and in unity in all our diversity.”

Earlier this month, the IOC reaffirmed its commitment to staging the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 on its 136th Session – the first-ever Session held by video conference – while managing the risks brought by the COVID-19.

“This is a mammoth task because we cannot prepare the Olympic Games as we are used to. In fact, we have to prepare for multiple scenarios for the Olympic Games,” the president said.

“So there was established one principle for all and this is a top priority, that the Olympic Games will respect and safeguard the health of all the participants. “We want to prepare these Games and adapt it to the circumstances of the crisis at the time while ensuring for everybody the Olympic spirit. Because this is what makes the Olympic Games so unique, uniting the entire world.”

The Session also confirmed that all the venues and the competition schedule intended for the Games in 2020 would remain the same next year.

Bach believes this is important for the athletes who needed to prepare for an extra 12 months in a difficult time.

“First of all, I would like to congratulate the many Olympic athletes and hopefuls around the world very much for their determination and resilience that they are showing in this, for them, extremely difficult period. I can feel with them what it means to prepare for an Olympic Games at the peak of your career in such uncertain circumstances.”

This is why we at the IOC are focusing on the athletes and we have extended all our support programs for one year, for 21.

We’re standing at their side.

We’re very happy that their preparations are facilitated by the great achievement of the Organizing Committee ensuring that the Olympic Games next year can take place in the same venues and with the same schedules so that they don’t need to change their preparations and, maybe most important of all, that they can look forward to spending time together to experience, to live the Olympic spirit in the Olympic Village,” he said.
