Despite several chances created and two shots on target, Morocco settled for a 0-0 draw with Croatia in World Cup Group F on Wednesday, but it was a result enough to make coach Walid Regragui proud.
“Croatia are one of the best teams in this tournament. They are playing in a superb way with incredible players like Luka Modric and Mateo Kovacic,” said Regragui.
“But everybody has weak points. Our main focus today was to make it impossible for Modric to gain the ball and I think we did pretty well.”
“We had a problem with the counterattack. Maybe we could have played better to intercept the ball more, but I think we were more efficient with the ball on the field today,” he added.
Facing Belgium in their next group game four days later, Regragui emphasized that the team needs to learn how to win this kind of tight game and improve the winning mentality.
“How to build up an attack and move forward to create chances will be what to focus on in the upcoming games. This game has given us more confidence.”
“African teams always ended up losing, but now we need to be aware that we are elite teams now, and we can compete with the best.”
