Ajax Amsterdam Friday completed the transfer of Dutch international Steven Bergwijn on a record transfer fee from Tottenham Hotspur.

The transfer fee of 31.25 million euros is a record for an incoming player in the history of Dutch professional soccer. The previous record was held by striker Sebastien Haller, who came from West Ham United to Ajax in January 2021 for 22.5 million euros and was transferred to Borussia Dortmund for 31 million euros earlier this week.

Bergwijn signed for five seasons until 2027. He was under contract with Tottenham Hotspur until 2025.

24-year-old forward Bergwijn played for the Ajax youth academy, but moved to PSV at the age of 13. He achieved his breakthrough at PSV and was sold by the latter club to Tottenham Hotspur for around 30 million euros in January 2020.

Despite some good moments, Bergwijn failed to become a regular at the Spurs and in his search for playing time he decided to move to Ajax, which was interested in signing Bergwijn for over one year already. With his transfer to Ajax, Bergwijn also hopes to secure a spot in the 2022 World Cup squad of the Netherlands.
