The world of athletics today marks the famous and historic record set by the world marathon record-holder Eliud Kipchoge at the INEOS Challenge in Vienna, Austria.

Kipchoge went into the books of history as the first man ever to run a marathon under two hours at an event dubbed INEOS 1:59 Challenge sponsored by the British chemical firm in October 2019.

Kipchoge ran the marathon distance for the INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, achieving a time of 1:59:40.2. The run did not count as a new marathon record, as standard competition rules for pacing and fluids were not followed and it was not an open event.

Taking to his social media pages on Wednesday, the 2022 Berlin Marathon champion likened his achievement as an inspirational story that encourages human race to break all the obstacles along the way in their daily lives.

“Today we celebrate the third anniversary of the INEOS 1:59 challenge. I can say that I still see the legacy of this event every day,” Kipchoge wrote.

“Together, we’ve inspired so many people in the whole world that No Human is Limited and in this world there will be no more possibilities. Today we celebrate the fact that you can break any barrier, there is no wall at all in this world.

“I am still very grateful for the entire team who helped us make history: the main sponsor INEOS the world-class pacemaking team, my NN Running Team teammates, the technical team, my coaches and above all my family.” He concluded.

Eliud Kipchoge is a double Olympic champion, four-time London Marathon champion and also a record four-time Berlin Marathon winner among other honours.
