Leaders Real Betis stretched their excellent start in  La Liga at the halfway point of the third round of matches in Spain.

Borja Iglesias’ thumping right foot shot gave his side a 1-0 win at home to Osasuna on Friday night to take them top of the table with three wins from three games.

Osasuna had the best of the early chances and hit the post, but had no response after Iglesias’ goal even after German Pezzella was sent off with 17 minutes left to play.

Real Sociedad won 1-0 away to Elche on Saturday afternoon thanks to Brais Mendez’s first half goal, which helped them forget Alexander Isak, who joined Newcastle United for 70 million euros on Friday.

The side from San Sebastian should have won by more goals, but Mikel Merino’s ‘Panenka’ style penalty was saved when Elche keeper Edgar Badia stood his ground to make an easy save.

Mallorca ended Rayo Vallecano’s unbeaten start to the campaign and claimed their first win, with a 2-0 triumph in the Vallecas Stadium.

Vedat Muriqi’s 13th minute header following a defensive mix-up put Mallorca ahead and Lee Kang-in took advantage of another error in the Rayo back line to double his side’s lead in the 65th minute

Friday also saw Iago Aspas’ third goal in three games give Celta their first win of the campaign as they won 1-0 away to an inoperative Girona.

The game between Almeria and Sevilla was a late kick off on Saturday.
