Shane Long scored his first league goal since April last year to earn Southampton a win over Leicester as the Premier League resumed after FA Cup break.

Southampton moved out of the relegation zone with a 2-1 win over hosts Leicester at the King Power Stadium, despite playing half the match with 10 men.

The Saints came into the contest having picked up four points in their last two Premier League away games, and found themselves in front after 11 minutes through James Ward-Prowse’s penalty.

Yan Valery sending off for a second yellow card just before halftime seemed to have made things difficult, but Long squeezed the ball home to double Southampton’s advantage just before the break.

Leicester committed more bodies forward in the second period and soon got themselves back in the match through Wilfred Ndidi’s scrappy goal in the 58th minute.

Southampton, however, held on to get the three points.

A London derby pitting host West Ham and Arsenal in an early kick-off saw the Hammers pull off a surprise 1-0 win.

In other matches, Liverpool opened a seven-point lead on the table with a 1-0 win at Brighton.

Moh Salah scored from the spot to give the Reds a scrappy win over the Seagulls.

Fulham lost 2-1 at Burnley, while Crystal Palace slipped to a 2-1 home defeat to Watford.

In the late kick-off, Chelsea increased their grip on fourth position and moved a point behind third-placed Tottenham with a 2-1 victory over Newcastle at Stamford Bridge .

Pedro gave the Blues an eighth-minute lead after David Luiz’s pass found him in the box where he composed himself before firing past Martin Dubravka.

But Newcastle equalised through Ciaran Clark’s powerful header before the break.

Willian, however, scored the winning goal for Chelsea in the second half with a fine curling finish after being played in by Eden Hazard.

Sunday offers the match of the weekend with Tottenham hosting Manchester United at Wembley, while Manchester City will be in action on Monday night at home to Wolves.
