Hosts Uganda beat Rwanda 2-0 in their opening match at this year’s  Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Senior Women’s Championship on Wednesday.

Striker Fazila Ikwaput put the hosts in front after 39 minutes with a well-taken strike that beat Rwanda’s goalkeeper Claudine Itangishaka.

The Rwanda team that last played in this regional tournament in 2018 kept pushing forward but failed to break down Uganda’s defending line in the Group A match played here in the central Ugandan district of Buikwe.

In the second half, Ikwaput netted her second goal of the evening on 48 minutes. The visiting Rwanda team tried to create some scoring chances but failed to convert them.

“This is a good start in the tournament against a strong Rwanda side. We now wait to face Djibouti on Friday where I expect my players to also perform well,” Uganda coach George Lutalo said.

In an earlier Group A match, Burundi defeated 10-man Djibouti 3-0 as Sandrine Niyonkuru netted a brace and Joelle Bukuru also got her name on the score sheet.

Djibouti’ Nadia Nour was given a red card on 42 minutes after a bad tackle.

Action returns on Thursday with Group B matches of Zanzibar facing Ethiopia and Tanzania taking on South Sudan.
