It is said moving house is one of life’s most stressful events – and Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk could just be about to find out.
But now Van Dijk faces the possibility of having to move home after new Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed his intention to move his family back to England, move out of the Lowry Hotel and reclaim his house from Van Dijk after taking over at Old Trafford permanently.
The Norwegian lived in a £4million, five-bedroom Cheshire mansion during his playing days, but put the property up for sale when he returned to Norway to manage Molde following his stint in charge of United’s reserve team.
It had been on the market for the last couple of years but when it failed to sell, Van Dijk snapped it up temporarily when he moved to Liverpool from Southampton last January.
Asked whether he had spoken to the Liverpool defender about his living arrangements ahead of United’s clash against Arsenal earlier this month, Solskjaer joked: “Yeah, he’s evicted.”
“We’ve really enjoyed the last eight years living in Norway,” Solskjaer said in an interview with the club following his appointment.
Solskjaer is unlikely to move back into his family home before the end of the season, allowing his three children to finish the school year in Norway.
But Van Dijk will still have to juggle house-hunting with Liverpool’s charges for Premier League and Champions League glory between now and May.
“It’s going to be a change for them but we’re looking forward to it. The six months that we agreed on [when initially taking the job on until the end of the season] as a family we agreed to do it separately as there was no need or use to move them over, that’s gone now. Now we’re moving together.”
“We built a house, or I started it in 2007, but finally maybe in 2019 we can move into it – that’s long planning!”
