LONDON, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) — Manchester City made it 16 wins in 16 games as they cruised past Tottenham 3-0 to tighten their hold at the top of the Premier League this weekend.
When Tottenham beat City 2-0 in November last year, Jose Mourinho’s side went top of the table, while City was struggling with 12 points from eight games, but Saturday’s match showed how much things have changed as City enjoyed an easy win against a dejected and disjointed Spurs.
City’s win was inspired by Ilkay Gundogan, who won the penalty that allowed Rodri to open the scoring, before scoring himself in the 50th and 66th minutes to confirm City’s dominance.
That victory was enough to put City seven clear at the top after Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw away to second from bottom West Brom on Sunday.
The home side opened the scoring after 90 seconds through Mbaye Diagne and it wasn’t until the stroke of halftime that Bruno Fernandes drew Manchester United level with a spectacular volley.
United had a penalty claim turned down by the VAR but Diagne also missed two chances for West Brom in a result which ultimately will leave neither side satisfied.
Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp admitted on Saturday that his side’s title defense was over after they caved in from a winning position against Leicester City to suffer their third consecutive defeat.
Mohamed Salah put Liverpool ahead in the 67th minute, but James Maddison’s free kick in the 78th minute signaled Liverpool’s collapse with goalkeeper Alisson Becker at fault for the second goal after colliding with new signing Ozan Kabak, before a mistake from Salah ended up with Harvey Barnes adding Leceister’s third five minutes from time to take them level with Manchester United.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored a hat-trick and Hector Bellerin added a fourth as Arsenal raced into a 4-0 lead at home to Leeds United in just 47 minutes. Pascal Struijk and Helder Costa scored for Leeds in the second half of a game that ended 4-2.
Danny Ings put Southampton ahead in the 25th minute against Wolves and the home side must have thought they were on their way to end a run of five consecutive defeats.
However, a Ruben Neves penalty in the 53rd minute and a spectacular individual goal from Pedro Neto 13 minutes later saw Wolves turn it around.
The Saints have now lost six from six.Two goals from new signing Josh Maja in the 53rd and 65th minutes saw Fulham shock Everton with a 2-0 win at Goodison Park to keep their hopes of avoiding relegation alive, although they are seven points behind fourth from bottom Newcastle.
Aston Villa goalkeeper Emi Martinez made nine saves to keep Brighton at bay and earn his side a 0-0 draw, while Burnley took another step towards safety thanks to a 3-0 win away to Crystal Palace after racing into a 2-0 lead after just 10 minutes thanks to goals from Johann Berg Gudmundsson and Jay Rodriguez, before Matthew Lowton assured the win soon after the break.
