Kenya’s Sports Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed has disbanded the national football governing body, Football Kenya Federation (FKF), and appointed a caretaker committee to run the sport.
This comes after Ms Mohamed received an audit report on FKF from the Sports Registrar Rose Wasike Thursday morning.
FKF led by embattled president Nick Mwendwa had strenuously rejected the audit carried out by government agencies over alleged misappropriation of funds.
But in a quick rejoinder, Mwendwa has come out guns blazing, vowing to remain in charge of the federation.
In a press conference held at the La Mada Hotel on Thursday afternoon, Mwendwa said “we won’t accept that decision.”
“We shall remain in charge, and football will continue in this country,” he said.
“FKF conforms to FIFA statutes. We reject this move [by the Sports ministry to disband the federation]. No football member should uphold or listen to them.”
The 15-member committee, expected to operate for six months, will be chaired by retired Justice Aaron Ringera.
Other members of the committee are General Retired Moses Oyugi, Fatma Adan, Philip Musyimi, Anthony Isayi, Elisha Kiplagat and Hassan Haji.
Other are Fredrick Tureisa, Mwangi Muthee, Neddy Atieno, Ali Amour, Titus Kasuve, Richard Omwela, Bobby Ogolla and JJ Masiga.
The FKF secretariat officials sent packing are Nick Mwendwa (president), Barry Otieno (CEO), Doris Petra (deputy chairperson), Michael Ouma, Anthony Makau, Chris Amimo, Nabea Mureithi, Davies Chege, David Bunei, Gabriel Mghendi, Benard Lagat, Ahmed Qadar Mohamed Dabar, Joseph Andere, Tony Kweya, Margaret Omondi and Christine Ojode.
The national football team, Harambee Stars, are set to play Uganda Cranes in a 2022 World Cup qualifier dead rubber match at 4pm in Entebbe.
