Reigning Olympic champion Conseslus Kipruto could face up to 15 years in jail if he’s found guilty of defilement.
Kipruto is reportedly on the run after he was accused of eloping with a high school student in Kenya.
According to K24 TV, the World 3,000m steeple chase champion allegedly housed a Form Two student whose real age could not immediately be established for three consecutive nights, forcing her parents to report to the police.
“A report was filed by the girl’s parents, who are complaining that Kipruto defiled their daughter. We cannot immediately confirm whether the girl is a minor or an adult. However, we are looking for the athlete whose whereabouts remain unknown,” a senior Police officer was quoted by K24 TV.
The girl’s parents filed a defilement report at the Mosoriot Police Station in Nandi County, West of Nairobi, after the girl allegedly confessed that she was ‘putting up at the athlete’s home in Chesumei upon interrogation. This was after her call logs revealed that she was in constant communication with the star athlete.
In the Kenyan education system, the average age of a Form Two student is 16, meaning that there are higher chances the girl could be a minor.
According to the law, one is liable to serve up to to 15 years in jail for defiling a minor age 15 and below.
The year 2020 hasn’t been good for Kipruto. In August this year, he tested positive for coronavirus which made him withdraw from the Diamond League meeting in Monaco.
