Hosts Uganda beat Burundi 3-1 in the final at the Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Senior Women’s Championship in the central Ugandan district of Buikwe on Saturday.

Sandra Nabweteme put the hosts in front after only two minutes into the final when she beat Burundi goalkeeper Amissa Inarukundo.

The Burundi team did not give up and tried to put Uganda under pressure, but only see Uganda go 2-0 up on 43 minutes as Fazila Ikwaput dribbled past three defenders to net her sixth goal of the tournament.

In the second half, Burundi made some changes and pressed Uganda before Joelle Bukuru scored in the 49th minute with a hard long shot that beat Uganda’s goalkeeper Daisy Nakaziro to pull one goal back.

The Burundi team continued to push forward, but a defensive mix-up gave Nabweteme a chance to score her second goal of the day to send Uganda 3-1.

Earlier on Saturday, Ethiopia beat Tanzania 2-1 to settle for a bronze medal.

Uganda’s Fazila Ikwpaut and Daisy Nakaziro were voted the Best Player and Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament respectively. Tanzania’s Opa Clement Tukumbuke won the Top Scorer’s Award with seven goals, while Tanzania also took the Fair Play Award.

The tournament attracted eight teams, namely Uganda, Burundi, Ethiopia, Tanzania, South Sudan, Rwanda, Zanzibar and Djibouti.
