Botswana will have a female boxer at the Olympics stage for the first time in the history of the Summer Games.

Although Botswana first took part in the Olympics in 1980 in Moscow, it has taken the Southern Africa nation 40 years to send a female pugilist.

Keamogetse Kenosi has now entered the history books after qualifying for the Olympic Games set to be staged in Tokyo, Japan, from July 24.

Kenosi secured the spot at the ongoing Africa qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal, after she stormed the finals where both the winner and the loser will book the tickets to Tokyo.

She beat Moroccan Bertal Widad to secure the ticket making her only the fourth athlete from Botswana after 800 meters specialist Nigel Amos, Christine Botlogetswe and and Galefele Moroko to have qúalified for the Olympics.

Nigel remains the only athlete from that country to have won an Olympic medal at the London 2012.

But it was not a good day for her compatriots after Lethabo Modukanele lost 5-0 to an Algerian opponent while Tefo Maitewa also fell to Ugandan opponent.

There have been calls to have the Olympics canceled over the fast spreading Coronavirus fear, though the organisers have insisted that it is too early to contemplate that, with five months to go to the games.

This week, Japanese Football League was suspended after the Olympics host nation reported a fourth fatality related to the deadly virus.
