AFCON Qualifiers 2023: Micho names Uganda Cranes provisional squad for Algeria match

Uganda Cranes head coach Milutin Sredojevic “Micho” has named a 42-man provisional squad for the side’s  forthcoming AFCON 2023 Qualifiers match against Group F  leaders Algeria in Douala City, Cameroon.

Among the 42 players, 18  are foreign-based while the rest play in the country’s local football.

Uganda Cranes will square it out  against the Desert Foxes on June 18th, 2023, seeking to secure their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations ticket.

The East African team is placed  3rd on their group with four points, the same as neighbours Tanzania and will later on play Niger in September.

TotalEnergies CHAN 2022 groups revealed

The  TotalEnergies African Nations Championship Algeria 2022 draw was done on Saturday evening in Algiers, Algeria.

In group A, host Algeria will lock horns with 2014 CHAN winners Libya, Ethiopia and Mozambique.

Group B features two-time champions Congo DR, Uganda, Cote d’Ivoire and Senegal. Group C includes defending champions Morocco, Sudan, Madagascar and Ghana.

Groups D and E are made up of three teams each and feature Mali, Angola and Mauritania on one side and Cameroon, Congo and Niger on the other.

The TotalEnergies African Nations Championship will take place from 13 January to 4 February 2023 in Algeria.

CAF delegation to visit TotalEnergies CHAN host cities and stadiums in Algeria

A CAF inspection delegation consisting of technical experts in various operational areas will visit the three cities that will host the TotalEnergies African Nations Championships (CHAN).

The particular championships will start from 13 January until 04 February 2023.

The inspection team will arrive on Thursday, 22 September 2022 in Algiers and will kick-off the visits the following day, Friday 23 September in Constantine.

The following day, Saturday 24 September – the delegation will be in Oran.  Sunday and Monday, 25 and 26 September, they will be in the capital Algiers.

The delegation will consists of technical experts from competitions, marketing, TV, safety and security, hospitality, protocol, medical, media and others.

They will inspect not just the stadiums but also a number of facilities and areas that will be used during the competitions including the hotels, hospitals and other areas.

CAF General Secretary, Veron Mosengo-Omba said: “With three months to the tournament, it is important we assess the state of readiness and give feedback to our hosts. In the last few months, CAF small teams have been visiting Algeria to inspect the venues but this inspection is a major one as it covers all aspects of the competition. The inspection team will report to myself and also our Executive Committee on the progress that is being made.”

He added: “We are also looking forward and preparing for the final draw on Saturday, 01 October 2022. The final draw is an important event in the countdown to the kick-off next year.”

Iconic Algiers  Opera House to host TotalEnergies CHAN 2022 draw

The Opera House in Algeria’s capital Algiers will host the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) Algeria 2022 final draw on Saturday, 01 October 2022.

This will be a major milestone in the countdown to next year’s CHAN to be hosted in Algeria between 13 January 2023 and 04 February 2023.

The Local Organising Commitee, working closely with CAF, has been working hard behind the scenes in the preparations for the competition and the official draw.

Built in 2016, the Boualem Bessaiah Opera House of Algiers has played host to major cultural events including major sporting events.

Sitting on a surface of more than 40000 M2, the Boualem Bessaiah Opera House of Algiers has capacity of 1300.

The hall is located in the western suburbs of the Algerian capital in the commune of Ouled Fayet (15 km from Algiers) and 30 minutes away by car from Algiers Houari Boumediene airport.

For the first time, 18 countries will participate in the event – an increase from 16 teams.

The participating countries are: Algeria (host country), Morocco, Libya, Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, Ivory Coast, Niger, Ghana, Cameroon, Congo, DR Congo, Uganda, Sudan, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Angola and Madagascar.

Odera hails the Simbas after booking Rugby Africa Cup final berth

Kenya 15s national rugby team head coach Paul Odera has given credit to his charges after qualifying for the Rugby Africa Cup final on Sunday.

Simbas sailed through  with a nerve-cracking 36-33 victory over Algeria in semifinal action at the Stade Delort in Marseille, France on Wednesday 6 July 2022.

The Kenyan side had to fight hard for the outcome, twice trailing the Algerians with fullback Darwin Mukidza restoring parity on both occasions by converting tries from inside center John Okoth to level the scores at 14-14.

It was Mukidza again who scored and converted his own try to give the Kenyan side a 21-14 lead at the break.

The adrenaline in the particular fixture was not over as the North Africans scored a converted try after the restart to level the scores at 21-21.

Jone Kubu’s penalty made it 24-21 in favour of the Simbas before hooker Eugene Sifuna converted to stretch Simbas lead to 31-21.

The Algerians reduced the deficit to within five points but Bryceson Adaka took the Simbas back to the driving seat with the game ending 36-33 after a good defense display from the Simbas

Speaking after the game, Odera said, “We struggled a bit in the setpieces but we have to give credit to them (Simbas). Every time Algeria came back at us we were able to get ahead. Algeria, as expected, were going to be a tough opponent. They were always going to put us under a lot of pressure in the forwards.”

“But mine is so much joy, we are one game away from coming back to France in 2023 which is huge. So proud of the team, just enjoying the win. We regroup, we recover and then we go again.The boys do realise that it is just 80 minutes away from making history as the first Simbas team to qualify for the Rugby World Cup, “ he concluded.

The Simbas will play Namiba in the Rugby Africa Cup final on Sunday 10 July 2022 in Marseille. Namibia beat Zimbabwe 34 -19 in the second semifinal of the Rugby Africa Cup on Wednesday night.

The Sunday’s final comes with a direct ticket of qualification as the African representative to the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France at stake.

Kenya Simbas will be looking for ways to play at the Rugby World Cup for the first time in the country’s history.

Kenya Simbas prevailed against the stubborn side of Algeria with a 36-33 victory to book a place in the final of the 2022 Rugby Africa Cup set for Sunday in Marseille, France.

It was the North Africans who were on top of their game in the initial stages of the first semifinal on Wednesday, taking a 14 -7 lead before Kenya came from behind twice to lead 21-14 at half time.

Algeria levelled matters after the interval but Kenya retained their lead, going ahead 31-26 thanks to Eugene Sifuna’s unconverted try and Bryceson Adaka’s five-pointer.

Algeria reduced the deficit courtesy of a penalty try that saw them move 36-33 against the Paul Odera’s charges.

However, the spirited Kenya Simbas held on to their advantage to the last minute of the encounter after surviving the real Algerian scare.

John Okoth(brace) and Darwin Mukidza were also try scorers for the Kenya Simbas in France.

Simbas will  either face Namibia or Zimbabwe in the final on Sunday with the winner of the Rugby Africa Cup booking their ticket in Pool A at the RugbyWorld Cup 2023  alongside Italy, New Zealand, Uruguay and the hosts France.

Meanwhile, the runners-up will head into the Final Qualification Tournament.

Algeria edge Uganda in 2023 AFCON Qualifiers opener

Hosts Algeria beat Uganda 2-0  in first round group F match of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers on Saturday.

Aissa Mandi opened the scoring in the 28th minute and Youcef Belaili sealed the victory in the 79th minute at the crowded 5 July 1962 Stadium in the capital Algiers.

Thanks to this victory, the Greens managed to reconcile with their fans following the elimination from the 2022 World Cup.

The 2023 Cup of Nations will be held in Cote d’Ivoire.

Cameroon appalled by Algeria’s match-fixing allegations

Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) President Samuel Eto’o has threatened to sue Algerian football authorities over match-fixing allegations.

Algerian football coach Djamel Belmadi had told Algerian TV that Cameroon’s 2022 World Cup playoff win over Algeria “was a conspiracy between two or three persons”.

Belmadi argued that Algeria’s home defeat this March in Blida was distorted by the referee’s performance.

“FECAFOOT disputes these defamatory allegations instilled in an allusive way and formulated in a repetitive way by the Algerian football leaders. Cameroon reserves the right to bring the matter before the FIFA Ethics Committee in the coming days,” Eto’o said in a statement on Monday night.

“FECAFOOT urges Algerian football leaders to use legal means to exercise their recognized rights,” he added.

Algeria didn’t play the best football in final but derserved win – Djamel Belmadi

Algerian coach Djamel Belmadi says his team deserved to win the trophy despite not playing well in the final.

Belmadi said his team worked very hard to win the Africa Cup of Nations at the expense of Senegal but admits his side didn’t play the best football in the game.

A fortuitous second minute strike from Baghdad Bounedjah boot deflected over Alfred Gomis and looped into the Senegal net. That was the only attempt made by Algeria in the entire match as Senegal went on to register 12 shots with three on target.

But Belmadi feels his side deserved to win the game even though they had only one shot which resulted in the goal.

“It wasn’t the best game in a technical sense, but in finals we play for the win and not for the good football. This triumph has a special taste as it is not played at home, we are top of African Football. I thank my players for their efforts, we doubly prepared for it,” he said.

The Desert Foxes secured their first title in 29 years with a blend of old and new with the likes of Rafik Halliche still going strong.

“Rafike Halliche has probably played his last game and Yacine Brahimi wasn’t fit because he was injured.

“This Tournament saw a birth of a new generation of players like Bennacer who was player of the tournament. The same goes to Adam Ounas who scored three goals,” Belmadi added.

2019 AFCON final preview: Algeria battle Senegal for the crown

The 2019 Total Africa Cup of Nations Tournament is coming to its conclusion tonight as two African giants Senegal and Algeria collide for the second time in Egypt with the crown at stake. The match is set for the Cairo International Stadium.

The Desert Foxes beat the Super Eagles of Nigeria 2-1 in the semi-finals while the Lions of Teranga overcame Tunisia.

For the first time, we will see two native local coaches go toe-to-toe in the final with Djamel Belmadi of Algeria and Aliou Cisse of Senegal.

Head to Head

The two teams met in the group staged of the competition with Algeria edging it, Youcef Belaili getting the only goal of the match for the Algeria.

Overall, there have been 22 meetings, with Senegal winning just 4 of those game losing 13 and drawing 5 matches.

Senegal have never beaten Algeria at the Africa Cup of Nations. Their last victory of Algeria came back in May 2008 during a FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Key Players

Without a doubt Aliou Cisse will miss the services of Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly who is suspended for the final.

Cheikhou Kouyate has to step to lead in defense. Papa Ndiaye and Idrissa Gana Gueye will be expected to do the business in midfield.

Sadio Mane is the main man for Senegal as the push for their first Afcon title.

Algerian coach Djamel Belmadi will be without 23 year old right back Youcef Atal who suffered an injury during the quarterfinal clash with Ivory Coast.

Mehdi Zeffane who took his place in the semifinal win against Nigeria will most likely continue in that role tonight.

Riyad Mahrez, Baghdad Bounedjah and Youcef Belaili will be leading at the front with Sofiane Feghouli and Ismael Bennacer moping up in the middle of the park.
