Shujaa learn opponents as Hong Kong 7s draw revealed

The Kenya men’s national sevens rugby team have been drawn in Pool D for Hong Kong 7s scheduledfor 4-6 November 2022 in Hong Kong.

Shujaa, who placed 12th at the close of the 2021/22  HSBC Sevens World Series with 49 points have been pooled with Argentina, Canada and Ireland.

Series champions Australia headline Pool A which also features their Trans Tasman neighbors New Zealand, Samoa and hosts Hong Kong while South Africa are in Pool B with France, Great Britain and Uruguay who debut on the series as a core side.

Fiji are top seeds in Pool C with USA, Spain and Japan completing the pool composition.

Messi to play his last World Cup in Qatar

This year’s FIFA World Cup in Qatar is set to mark the last time that Argentina captain Lionel Messi plays in football’s showpiece event.

The 35-year-old Paris Saint-Germain forward will be making his fifth appearance at a World Cup when the competition begins on November 20.

“There’s some anxiety and nerves at the same time. It is the last one,” Messi told Latin American streaming service Star Plus.

Argentina are among the favorites to lift international football’s most coveted trophy on December 18, having gone 32 games without defeat. The sequence dates back to July 2019 and includes last year’s Copa America triumph – the Albiceleste’s first major title since 1993.

Despite the impressive run, Messi insisted that recent results would count for nothing on football’s biggest stage.

“In a World Cup, anything can happen,” said Messi, who is Argentina’s all-time leading scorer with 90 goals in 164 games.

“All the matches are very tough. The favorites don’t always end up winning. I don’t know if we’re the favorites, but Argentina are always candidates because of our history. Now even more so because of the form we’re in, but we are not the favorites. I think there are other teams ahead of us.”

Messi said he was at ease with his status as a leader and role model in the current Argentina squad. And he described last year’s Copa America title as a “monkey off my back” after the Albiceleste’s 2014 World Cup final loss to Germany and successive defeats to Chile in the 2015 and 2016 Copa America finals.

“It’s been very hard but in 2019 a new group with many young people came in and then we won the Copa America,” he said.

“That helped us a lot. I couldn’t believe it, can’t explain it. It’s one of the goals I needed to wrap everything up. It was very important for me to win something with the national team.”

The 1978 and 1986 World Cup winners will begin their campaign against Saudi Arabia on November 22 before facing Mexico and Poland in Group C.

Brazil, Argentina grab wins in international friendlies

Brazil beat Ghana 3-0  with winger Richarlison scoring twice while another South American powerhouse Argentina also grabbed a 3-0 victory over Honduras in pre-World Cup international friendlies on Friday.

Brazil opened the scoring by Marquinhos’s bullet header in the ninth minute from a corner by Raphinha. Richarlison extended the advantage just before the half-hour mark with a pin-point strike from the edge of the penalty area into the bottom left corner.

Assisted by Neymar, the Tottenham Hotspur forward added the third for the team on the stroke of halftime with a clever first-time header from a freekick to seal a comfortable 3-0 victory.

Since losing the final of the Copa America last year, the five-time world champion has been accumulating a 14-game unbeaten streak — 11 wins and three draws, with 33 goals for and just four goals against.

Elsewhere, in the duel between Argentina and Honduras, Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez scored the opener with a right footed shot from very close range.

Argentina dominated the whole game with offensive attack as captain Lionel Messi doubled the lead by converting a penalty before the halftime break. In the 69th minute, Messi scored his second by unleashing a shot outside the box.

The 2022 World Cup host Qatar lost to Canada 2-0 at Generali Arena in Vienna, Austria.

In other matches held on the day, Mehdi Taremi’s lone goal in the 79th minute helped Iran stun Uruguay 1-0, Morocco took down Chile 2-0, and Saudi Arabia held Ecuador to a 0-0 draw.

Lionesses beat Argentina to reach Challenger Series semifinals

Kenya Lionesses are now just two games away from attaining core status on the World Rugby Sevens Series after defeating Argentina 24-7 in their quarterfinal fixture at the World Rugby Sevens Challenger Series in Santiago, Chile on Sunday morning.

They took a 12-0 lead into the interval courtesy of tries from Christabel Lindo and Judith Auma with Grace Okulu adding a conversion.

A dominant second half saw the Lionesses add two more tries through Janet Okello and Lindo who managed her brace with Okulu managing a conversion before the Argentines grabbed a converted consolation try from Marta Reding.

They will play the winner of the Japan/Belgium quarterfinal at 5.58pm EAT on Sunday.

FIFA Appeal Committee passes decisions on Brazil v Argentina WC qualifier

The FIFA Appeal Committee has taken decisions on the appeals lodged by the Brazilian Football Association (CBF) and the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) against the decisions issued by the FIFA Disciplinary Committee on the abandoned Brazil versus  Argentina match in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifiers on 5 September 2021.

After analysing the submissions of both parties and considering all circumstances of the case, the Appeal Committee confirmed that the match would be replayed and also upheld the fine of CHF 50,000 that was imposed on both associations as a result of the abandonment.

With respect to the parties’ deficiencies in terms of their responsibilities and/or obligations in connection with the match, the Appeal Committee decided:

to reduce to the amount of CHF 250,000 the fine imposed on the CBF with respect to infringements related to order and security;

to reduce to the amount of CHF 100,000 the fine imposed on the AFA with respect to its failure to comply with its obligations in relation to the preparation of and its participation in the match.

The decisions passed by the Appeal Committee were notified to the parties concerned today.

2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers : Argentina, Uruguay in goalless draws

MONTEVIDEO, October. 7 (Xinhua) — Argentina and Uruguay had to settle for goalless draws in their respective 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Colombia on Thursday.

In Asuncion, Argentina looked in control for most of the match but struggled to find a way past the hosts’ defense as Albiceleste captain Lionel Messi endured a frustrating night.

The Paris Saint-Germain forward’s best scoring chance came when he curled a first-half free-kick narrowly wide of the far post.

The hosts had goalkeeper Antony Silva to thank for denying Argentina a late winner as he launched himself sideways to keep out Nicolas Gonzalez’s dipping shot.

Carlos Gonzalez had a chance to steal an unlikely victory for Paraguay but sent his shot from 12 yards sailing over the bar.

Argentina remain unbeaten with five wins and four draws from their nine qualifiers so far while Paraguay have two wins, six draws and two defeats.

Meanwhile, Colombia secured a vital point away from home at Montevideo’s Gran Parque Central stadium. Uruguay dominated for much of the first half and were unlucky not to go ahead when Suarez was flagged for a marginal offside after finding the back of the net in the 22nd minute.

Suarez also sent a close-range attempt wide of the target when he had only goalkeeper David Ospina to beat.

Colombia’s best scoring opportunity came in the 70th minute when Luis Diaz’s cross left Duvan Zapata one on one with goalkeeper Fernando Muslera six yards out. But the Atalanta striker sent a timid attempt straight at the Galatasaray stopper.

Muslera then tipped Jefferson Lerma’s looping header over the bar after a Juan Cuadrado set piece.

Colombia now have 14 points from 10 qualifiers, two points behind Uruguay.

The top four teams in the South American group will earn an automatic berth at next year’s World Cup in Qatar while the fifth-ranked side will advance to an intercontinental playoff.

Aston Villa goalkeeper Martinez earns Argentina call-up

BUENOS AIRES, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) — Uncapped Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has been named in Argentina’s squad for their opening 2022 World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Bolivia next month.

The 28-year-old was one of five Premier League players included in manager Lionel Scaloni’s preliminary 30-man squad on Friday.

The others were Tottenham defender Juan Foyth, Manchester City center-back Nicolas Otamendi, Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso and Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

Martinez’s call-up came two days after he ended his 10-year spell at Arsenal to join rivals Aston Villa for a reported fee of 20 million euros (around 24 million US dollars).

Surprise absentees in Scaloni’s squad were Paris Saint-Germain forwards Angel Di Maria and Mauro Icardi as well as Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.

As expected, Barcelona star Lionel Messi heads the list, with Juventus forward Paulo Dybala and Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez also included.

The South American zone World Cup qualifiers were originally scheduled to begin in late March but were suspended because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Argentina will host Ecuador at the Bombonera in Buenos Aires on October 8 before a clash with Bolivia in La Paz five days later.

Messi gets Second Red Card of Career as Argentina Beat Chile

Argentina beat Chile 2-1 in a hot-tempered Copa America third-place play-off in which Lionel Messi was shown only the second red card of his career. The Barcelona forward had provided the assist for Sergio Aguero’s opener before Paulo Dybala made it 2-0.

Messi was shown a red following a clash with Gary Medel, which also saw the Chilean dismissed.

Arturo Vidal scored a second-half penalty but Argentina held off the fightback to secure third place.

The sendings off of Medel and Messi – who has never been sent off for Barcelona, and whose only other red card was on his international debut 14 years ago, was the big talking point according to the BBC. Tension had been building as the game wore on in a physical encounter with both sides often giving away niggly free-kicks.

Tempers spilled over eight minutes before half time when Messi appeared to nudge over Medel as they both challenged for the ball. Messi and Argentina had previously expressed their frustration with the officiating during the Copa America

Medel responded by forcibly pushing his face into Messi’s as the two players argued before the referee arrived and dismissed them both reported the BBC. It seemed harsh on Messi, who in the replays of the incident did not appear to respond aggressively to Medel’s action.

Chile had also lost Alexis Sanchez to injury early on. The Manchester United forward appeared to suffer a hamstring injury when chasing a long ball over the defence.

Argentina Face Brazil in Copa America Quarter-Finals

Brazil will play Argentina in the Copa America semi-final in a titanic clash that is expected to overshadow the underwhelming displays that have highlighted the tournament.

Lionel Messi who has had a below par performance for Argentina with only one goal admitted that he is struggling at the Copa America, reported the BBC.

“It is not my best Copa America, I am not having the one I had hoped,” the Barcelona star said after Argentina’s 2-0 quarterfinal win over Venezuela. “The important thing is that we won.”

Messi has only scored once at the tournament in which Argentina have struggled offensively.

They scraped into the last eight with a nervy 2-0 win over Qatar in their final group stage game after losing to Colombia and drawing with Paraguay.

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni did not want to be drawn on Messi’s poor display in the post-game news conference but said his presence alone is good for the team.

“Messi’s contribution on the pitch is essential, if you could see what he gives us in the dressing room you’d think differently. I assure you it’s great to have him here,” Scaloni said.

Argentina scored for the second game running to put Argentina in front in the 10th minute with a clever back-heeled finish, while substitute Giovani Lo Celso scored Argentina’s badly-needed second goal in the 74th minute on a loose ball that squirmed through the hands of Venezuela goalkeeper Wuilker Farinez.

With the victory over La Vinotinto, Argentina will now face eternal rivals Brazil for the first time in the tournament since the 2007 final, which they lost 3-0.

In the other semi-final game, Chile play Peru on Wednesday with neither side having managed a goal in its past two games.

Peru have only scored in one of four matches but have not come close to finding the back of the net in the last two, and yet they are through to the last four of the world’s oldest continental competition.

To make matters worse, Wednesday’s semifinal takes place on the dreadful ploughed field of a pitch in Porto Alegre.

COPA AMERICA: Argentina set up tantalising semi-final against hosts Brazil

Argentina set up a tantalising Copa America semi-final against hosts Brazil after easing past Venezuela 2-0.

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero was involved in both goals as Argentina aim for their third straight final.

Aguero’s low drive was flicked in by Lautaro Martinez and goalkeeper Wuilker Farinez then spilled the striker’s shot for Giovani Lo Celso to tap home.

Venezuela created very little and Ronald Hernandez saw his shot from close range kept out by Franco Armani.

In fact, that was Venezuela’s only shot on target with River Plate goalkeeper Armani redundant for much of the game, though he did prove to be an effective aerial presence.

Lionel Scaloni’s side will play Brazil in Mineirao at 01:30 BST on Wednesday after the tournament hosts edged past Paraguay on penalties following a 0-0 draw.

Though he was largely quiet against Venezuela, captain Lionel Messi will take heart from knowing Argentina are one win away from another Copa America final.

They have been beaten on the past two occasions on penalties by Chile and lost in the final in four of the past five tournaments.

Argentina were the better side in a fragmented game not helped by Colombian referee Wilmar Roldan handing out six yellow cards and stopping play on a number of occasions to consult about incidents with the video assistant referee.

Inter Milan striker Martinez should have had two goals in the game, but struck the outside of the post in a one-on-one with the goalkeeper, while substitute Angel di Maria curled straight at Farinez late on.

Brazil edged out Paraguay 4-0 on penalties in the other quarter-final match.
