Caf Awards: Mane to face Mendy, Salah in defense of men’s Player of the Year gong
Senegal sensation Sadio Mane will face compatriot Edouard Mendy and Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah in defense of his CAF Men’s Player of the Year award tonight.
The awards ceremony will be held in Rabat, Morocco.
Both Mane and Mendy picked up personal awards after Senegal won the Africa Cup of Nations this year in Cameroon while Egypt captain Mohamed Salah settled for a runners-up medal.
Mane was crowned Africa’s best player back in 2019 after having a wonderful spell with Liverpool in the English Premier League and the Africa Cup of Nations with the Lions of Teranga.
The new Bayern Munich’s forward stands a better opportunity to retain his Confederation of African Football’s (Caf) Player of the Year award after the organisers cut down its shortlist in the men and women’s categories.
Riyad Mahrez, Naby Keita, Vincent Aboubakar, Karl Toko Ekambi, Achraf Hakimi, Sebastien Haller and Kalidou Koulibaly have all been dropped from the initial 10-man long list released over a week ago by CAF.
Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala also stands a chance to defend her award after women’s shortlist has also been revealed.
The Africa’s most decorated footballer will face competition from Cameroon forward Ajara Nchout Njoya and Zambia midfielder Grace Chanda to the award.
Barcelona forward Oshoala was named Africa’s best female player in 2019. The ceremony has not been going on since that time because of coronavirus emergence.
Caf, African football’s governing body, has also announced the final lists for other men and women’s categories including Coach, Young Player, Interclub Player, Club, National team and goal of the year awards.
All the winners will be named on Thursday apart from the women’s national team of the year award, which will be announced after the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final on Saturday in Morocco.

Mane beats Salah and Mahrez to be crowned Africa’s best
Senegal and Liverpool FC forward Sadio Mane is the Caf African Player of the Year Award winner for 2019.
The striker had an excellent 2018/19 season as the Reds went on to win the Champions League as well as finishing second in the English Premier League behind eventual winners Manchester City.
Mane has beaten teammate Mohammed Salah of Egypt and Manchester City’s Riyad Mahrez who also turns out for Algeria.
The 27-year old was a co-winner of the Premier League Golden Boot last season after notching 22 goals alongside Salah and Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
This is a great achievement for the Senegalese who finished third in 2016 behind Mahrez before finishing second behind Salah in the following two years.
The player is also in a good form this season and has helped Liverpool open a 13-point gap in the league.
Nigeria’s Asisat Oshoala won the award in the women category while Egyptian FA was rewarded as the best in the continent.
Salah, Mane and Mahrez to battle for the African Player of the Year Award
The top three candidates for Caf Awards have been reached following votes from the Caf Technical and Development Committee as well as a panel of media experts with an emphasis on the nominees’ performance in 2019.
A panel of Caf Legends which is made up of former winners of African Player of the Year Award were also allowed to vote while the selected players took part in choosing the Player of the Year for both men and women.
Head coaches and captains will have a hand in the selection of the player of the year with winners to be announced on January 7, 2020 at the Albatros Citadel Sahl Hasheesh, Hurghada, Egypt.
