Manchester United defender Victor Lindelof is at the centre of a police investigation after receiving hate messages and threats when for snubbing Sweden call-up for Euro 2020 qualifiers.
Lindelof, 24, withdrew from the national team’s squad to face Romania and Norway as wife Maja Nilsson is due to give birth in early April.
According to Aftonbladet, the Swedish FA have been forced to call in cops after Lindelof was bombarded with abuse on social media.
RB Leipzig playmaker Emil Forsberg has also been targeted online after he left Sweden’s camp following a reported bust-up with boss Janne Andersson.
Martin Fredman – Sweden’s FA security chief – said: “We are aware that players have received threats and hatred. We have contacted the police.
“Of course we follow up on threats and violations. “We have had a number of them sent to us… we have a plan, and things are under control.
“We will speak to the players after the international get-together.”
“Something has happened to one or more players regarding unauthorised influence and possibly threats,” said Swedish police boss Fredrik Gardare.
