Sofapaka chasing services of defender Musa Mohammed

Sofapaka President Elly Kalekwa has revealed the club is keen on signing former Gor Mahia defender Musa Mohammed.

The central defender is a free agent after his contract with Zambian top tier side Nkana expired and the Congolese investor has been an admirer of the experienced Kenya defender.

“It is not an open secret that Sofapaka have always wanted to sign Musa [Mohammed], since we engaged him last season before he left for Zambia,” Kalekwa told Goal.

“I am informed he is now a free agent after ending his contract with Nkana but we have not reached out or talked to him. We will talk to him when the right time comes, he is a good player, who can fit in well into our squad and give us the leadership quality that we want in the team.”

The 29-year-old joined Nkana in 2018 and has enjoyed his time at the club as he revealed to Nairobi News recently. 

“I could renew my deal at Nkana, I have enjoyed my stay at Nkana and even though we did not win titles over there, we had some great success especially in the continental matches.

“Life in Zambia and Kenya is almost the same and the club is professionally run. Other clubs have shown interest in my services and we have had some talks. I have an elaborate decision to make on the way forward. I hope to have some news soon.” 

Harambee Stars defender eyes contract extension at Nkana

Harambee Stars defender Musa Mohammed has revealed his intentions to continue plying his trade in the Zambian Super League.

 The former Gor Mahia center half is currently a free agent after his two year deal with the Zambian side Nkana lapsed in early June.

However, despite attracting attention from regional bigwigs such as Vodacom Premier League heavyweights Yanga, the Kenyan international is Keen on penning a new deal with the Red Devils.

“I could renew my deal at Nkana,” Mohammed is quoted by Nairobi News.

“I have enjoyed my stay at Nkana and even though we did not win titles over there, we had some great success especially in the continental matches.”

He admits Nkana is professionally run after a two-year stint in the Southern Africa country, perhaps one of the reasons he intends to ignore other offers.

“Life in Zambia and Kenya is almost the same and the club is professionally run. Other clubs have shown interest in my services and we have had some negotiations. I have an elaborate decision to make on the way forward. I hope to have some news soon.”

Mohammed spent seven years (2010 -2017) at Gor Mahia, winning four premier league titles with the Green Army in the process.

The 29-year-old sealed a two-year move to Albanian side KF Tirana in 2018.

His stay in Europe was however short-lived as the ace agreed another two year-deal with Nkana same year after cutting links with his former employee.

Mohammed represented Kenya in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, even though the national team failed to advance to the knock-out stages of the competition.

Defender Musa ruled out of Stars friendly against DRC

Defender Musa Mohammed has been ruled out of the Harambee Stars friendly match against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday.

Stars who are camping in France ahead of the continental showpiece — the Africa Cup  of Nations — will face off with DRC in their second and final pre-Afcon friendly match away in Madrid, Spain.

The Nkana FC defender is still recovering from an injury and Coach Sébastien Migne has made a pronouncement that he will not be risking his main back up after Brian Mandela was rule out of the forthcoming championship.

“We will not risk fielding Musa because our priority is our match against Algeria. In his absence we have an opportunity to see what other players can offer,” Migne said.

The match, slated for Saturday, June 15, 2019, at the Estadio de Santa Ana in Madrid, Spain, starting at 7pm EAT, comes after Kenya beat Madagascar 1-0 in the first pre-Afcon friendly played on Friday last week.

Mine has expressed optimism that Musa will be fit in time for Afcon and that he has enough depth to plug in the void.

Migne further issued a rallying call to fans to create a positive vibe around the national team as they prepare to go back to the continental stage for the first time in 15 years.

“Don’t forget where we were one year ago. The players have achieved something fantastic. We are not a high-level team, we are on the way, and we can only get to the top if Kenyans support us,” he said.

The team is currently in the second of its three-week camp at the French Rugby Federation in Paris, France.

Ahead of the friendly match, Stars will jet out to Madrid on Saturday and are scheduled to arrive in Spain at 2pm.

The team will then fly back to France on Sunday, three days before their scheduled departure to Cairo, Egypt, on June 19, 2019.

Migne upbeat even as injury crisis hits Stars camp in France

Harambee Stars have been hit with injury crisis with up to two players in serious doubt of appearing in the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Egypt.

Already Brian Mandela has been ruled out of the trip while Musa Mohammed will not play in this weekend’s build up match against the Democratic Republic of Congo due to injury concerns.

Mandela, a dependable defender, picked a knee injury on Monday, shattering his dreams of making his maiden Afcon appearance.

Mandela injured his knee in Stars’ Monday morning training session and will not be fit in time for the build up match slated for June 15 in Madrid, Spain, and  neither will he recover in time for the trip to Egypt, three days later.

“Brian got injured today in training. He is one of our key players and will not be available for Afcon. We will need to find a solution,” said coach Sebastien Migne.

Migne is also waiting to see if Musa Mohammed will recover in time before he names his final 24-man squad to head to Cairo, though the Nkana FC defender has also been ruled out of the DRC match.

“It is not good for us and for him as well. Musa also picked up a knock in Harambee Stars’ friendly match against Madagascar. We cannot take a risk with him against DRC but he could be available for Afcon,” added the coach.

But the French tactician has remained defiant in the face of the injury woes .

“We won against Ghana without key players. It is always problematic for the coach but we will try to find a solution,” he said.

Stars will jet to Egypt on June 19, 2019, five days before their opening match of the tournament against Algeria.
