Suarez to decide his future as River Plate come knocking
Uruguayan ace Luis Suarez is on the verge of making an imminent decision about his future amid speculation linking him with a move to River Plate.
In a conversation streamed on social media, the 35-year-old responded to suggestions that he is in advanced talks with the Argentine giants.
“They are saying a lot of things. We’ll see. The sooner (it’s resolved) the better,” Suarez said on Twitch.
Suarez is a free agent after parting ways with Atletico Madrid last month. He scored 34 goals in 83 appearances across all competitions for the Spanish club following his 2020 move from Barcelona.
The No. 9 has also been linked with Juventus, Atalanta, Inter Miami and Barcelona.
River Plate manager Marcelo Gallardo said on Sunday that Suarez and Colombia international striker Miguel Borja were on the club’s radar following the departure of Julian Alvarez to Manchester City.
Palmeiras survive River Plate comeback to reach Copa Libertadores final
SAO PAULO, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) — Brazil’s Palmeiras clinched a place in the Copa Libertadores final despite a 2-0 home defeat to Argentine side River Plate in a dramatic second leg of their semifinal on Tuesday.
Robert Rojas and Rafael Santos Borre struck first-half goals for the visitors, but Palmeiras withstood a second-half onslaught to advance by virtue of their 3-0 victory in Buenos Aires last week.
Palmeiras goalkeeper Weverton was forced to make 11 saves while the hosts could not manage a single shot on target at an Allianz Parque bereft of fans because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
River also controlled 66 percent of possession and completed 414 passes to Palmeiras’ 230.
The Buenos Aires club’s dominance continued even after Rojas was shown a red card in the 73rd minute.
But Marcelo Gallardo’s men were unable to find an elusive third goal as their hopes of a fourth Copa Libertadores final appearance in six years dissipated.
“We never believed the tie was over and we knew it was going to be difficult,” Weverton told reporters after the match.
“We had to suffer to win it. River were great rivals.” River looked a completely different side to the team that was trounced in the first leg.
Paraguayan defender Rojas began their revival with a powerful header just before the half-hour mark following a Nicolas de la Cruz corner.
Colombian striker Santos Borre made it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time, capitalizing on chaotic Palmeiras defending to nod in at the far post after Matias Suarez failed to make clean contact with another De La Cruz delivery into the box.
River appeared to equalize in the 55th minute when Gonzalo Montiel thumped an angled shot past goalkeeper Weverton.
But the goal was ruled out by Uruguayan referee Esteban Ostojich, who deemed there was an offside in the buildup after consulting the video assistant referee.
The visitors were dealt another blow shortly after when Rojas was shown a second yellow card for dragging down Rony Barbosa.
Despite their numerical disadvantage, the visitors continued to threaten the Palmeiras defence. But the hosts survived 13 minutes of tension-filled stoppage time to secure a berth in their fifth Libertadores final as they bid to win South America’s top club trophy for a second time.
Abel Ferreira’s team will play either Boca Juniors or Santos in the decider at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana stadium on January 30.
Santos held Boca to a goalless draw in Buenos Aires last week and the deciding leg of their semifinal will be played at Santos’ Vila Belmiro stadium on Wednesday.
Copa Libertadores final to be played without fans
RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) — The Copa Libertadores final at Rio de Janeiro’s iconic Maracana stadium will be played behind closed doors because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) said on Tuesday.
The decision follows discussions involving representatives of CONMEBOL, the Brazilian Football Confederation and local health authorities.
“The current situation of the Covid-19 pandemic, still in expansion in South America, does not allow the organization of an event of such magnitude and importance with the presence of the public, even in a reduced attendance,” the Asuncion-based entity said in a statement.
Scheduled for January 30, the Copa Libertadores final is considered the most important match in South American club football.
Argentina’s River Plate and Brazil’s Palmeiras have been drawn to face each other in one semifinal while Santos and Boca Juniors will meet in the other.
The final of the second-tier Copa Sudamericana, slated for January 23 at the Mario Alberto Kempes stadium in the Argentine city of Cordoba, will also be played without fans, CONMEBOL said.
Argentine striker Pratto set for Feyenoord move
BUENOS AIRES, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) — River Plate striker Lucas Pratto is poised to join Dutch side Feyenoord on a six-month loan, the Buenos Aires club said on Monday.
The 32-year-old is due to arrive in the Netherlands on Tuesday to undergo a medical and finalize personal terms.
“He asked us to accept the request so that he can continue his career there,” River sporting director Enzo Francescoli told local television.
“It’s a part of football. Argentina is going through a tough time and the players also need to be listened to. Nobody wants to see him go but in this world you have to make decisions. Maybe we’ll regret it but it’s what Lucas wants.”
Pratto, who has been capped five times for Argentina’s national team, has scored just four goals in 31 matches across all competitions for River Plate this year.
Argentina goalkeeper Armani ‘happy’ at River Plate
BOGOTA, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) — Argentina international goalkeeper Franco Armani has reiterated his commitment to River Plate despite reports linking him with clubs in Mexico and Turkey.
The 33-year-old says he wants to see out his current contract with the Buenos Aires outfit – which expires in June 2022 – before ending his career with former club Atletico Nacional in Colombia.
“I am very happy [at River]. From the day I arrived I’ve been treated spectacularly and made to feel at home,” Armani told Colombian news outlet Rincon del Deporte.
Armani has reportedly attracted the interest of Turkey’s Besiktas and Mexican side Pumas, however the only club on his radar, beyond River Plate, is Atletico Nacional, where he played from 2010 to 2018.
“When I left Nacional I made a commitment with their fans and I intend to keep that promise,” he said.
“Atletico Nacional mean everything to me. They believed in me and saw me grow up as both a footballer and a person. I only have words of gratitude and I’d like to retire there.”
Armani won 13 trophies during his time with the Medellin side, including the 2016 Copa Libertadores – South America’s top club competition.
