GABORONE, March 19 (Xinhua) — Botswana National Olympic Committee (BNOC) and local sportswear company All Kasi on Thursday launched the “United for BW Sports” fundraiser campaign for Team Botswana to the Tokyo Olympics.
Addressing the stakeholders and the media in Gaborone, BNOC president Botsang Tshenyego said “we thought we were beginning the second golden decade of international performance by qualifying more sports and athletes for Tokyo 2020.”
Botswana currently have five athletes qualified for the Games, including female boxer Keamogetse Kenosi.
The “United for BW Sports” campaign will generate funds through the production and sale of Team Botswana replica jerseys. All Kasi is hoping to sell 100,000 replica jerseys at a cost of 400 Pula per jersey (about 36.58 U.S. dollars).
Speaking at the scene, Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sport and Culture Development, Tumiso Rakgare commended athletes and technical officials for demonstrating a high level of resilience to overcome the effects of COVID-19 and to qualify for the Olympics.
He said that the government will continue to support Team Botswana and make sure they safely arrive in Tokyo in July.
