Ruthless Ajax demolish Rangers in Champions League
Dutch champions Ajax started their UEFA Champions League campaign with a convincing 4-0 victory over Rangers in Amsterdam on Wednesday.
Ajax coach Alfred Schreuder surprisingly chose Mohammed Kudus as a central striker, while Calvin Bassey, who joined Ajax from Rangers in August, started in defense.
For Scottish giants Rangers, the match in the Johan Cruyff Arena marked their return to the Champions League after 12 years’ absence.
From the beginning, Ajax outplayed Rangers. Edson Alvarez headed Ajax in front from a Steven Berghuis corner and the latter doubled the scoring.
The choice of coach Schreuder for Kudus, who was refused a transfer to Everton in August, turned out to be a shrewd one, with the Ghanaian playing well and hitting home the third goal.
In the second half, the pace of the match slowed down and Ajax seemed satisfied. A goal by Rangers’ Borna Barisic was disallowed for offside and Steven Bergwijn made it 4-0 after a mistake by Ryan Jack.
Next up for Ajax in Group A is Liverpool at Anfield on September 13, while Rangers host Napoli.
Ajax sign defender Calvin Bassey from Rangers
Dutch champions Ajax Wednesday reached an agreement with Rangers FC for the move of defender Calvin Bassey.
Bassey will land at Amsterdam as successor of Lisandro Martinez who has since joined English Premier League side Manchester United.
The 22-year-old Nigerian international signed a contract with Ajax for five seasons until mid-2027. Ajax will pay Rangers FC from Glasgow, Scotland, a transfer fee of 23 million euros (23.53 million U.S. dollars), which could increase to 26.5 million euros including bonuses.
Bassey impressed in Rangers’ Europa League campaign last season which led to the final. He was under contract with Rangers until mid-2024. Bassey arrived in Austria on Wednesday to join the training camp of Ajax.
In Amsterdam, the left-footed central defender succeeds Argentinian Lisandro Martinez, who left for Manchester United last Sunday. Ajax and Manchester United reached an agreement on a transfer fee of 57.37 million euros, which can run up to 67.37 million euros through variables.
Diehard fans push Frankfurt to Europa League victory
Following his favorite club was a must for the 42-year-old, despite having to travel over 11,000 kilometers to attend the 2022 Europa League final in Seville when Eintracht crossed swords with Rangers.
Taking a flight from Hong Kong to Istanbul followed by a connection to Madrid, the German supporter hopped into a train carrying him to the south of Spain.
On Wednesday evening, Bruch got exactly the reward he was dreaming of. After a stressful 30-hour trip, the fan was part of the enthusiastic crowd celebrating Germany’s first Europa League triumph since 1997.
After a nail-biting encounter over 120 minutes (1-1), Frankfurt won 5-4 in a thrilling penalty shootout. 42 years after the club won its last continental title in 1980, Oliver Glasner’s team finally did it again.
The 2021-22 competition ended with Eintracht as the only unbeaten team, not losing any of its 13 games.
Among tens of thousands of fans, the Hong Kong resident couldn’t hold back his emotions. Unleashed chants and celebrations followed a successful journey over recent months, including a surprising victory over Spanish giants FC Barcelona.
Frankfurt became the only fourth German team after Leverkusen (1988), Bayern (1996), and Schalke (1997) to win the Europa League or its precursor competition, the UEFA Cup.
Since the restructured Europa League was established in the 2009-10 season, no German side had won the competition.
In the 2018-19 season, Frankfurt was the surprise of the campaign as the team reached the semifinals against Chelsea but narrowly lost on penalties.
Since then, the Europa League has turned into the club’s favorite competition.
About 50 000 fans followed the side to Barcelona and created a home-soil atmosphere in the Camp Nou. Incredible support continued around the final in Sevilla.
Close to midnight, a brave save from Frankfurt keeper Kevin Trapp secured the 2022 trophy, along with qualification for next season’s Champions League.
“We are all heroes,” the German international said.
“We all did this, just take a look at that,” Trapp added as he pointed in the direction of the Eintracht fans.
German international Ansgar Knauff admitted he was “close to a heart attack” during the penalties. A year ago, the 20-year-old was playing in Germany’s third-tier in Borussia Dortmund’s second team before joining Frankfurt on loan.
“This was a team effort and that is including our fans,” captain Sebastian Rode said after he played over 90 minutes despite suffering from a wound on his forehead since the game’s early stages.
In the streets of Seville, tens of thousands of Eintracht fans celebrated until the early morning hours. Back in Frankfurt, over 100,000 supporters started spontaneous parties in the club’s arena around a public viewing and uncountable beer gardens.
Over 200,000 fans are expected to cheer the team after returning to Frankfurt this Thursday at the city’s famous Romer Place on the town hall’s balcony.
Frankfurt edge Rangers to lift Europa League crown
Eintracht Frankfurt edged Rangers 5-4 in penalty shootouts to clinch the UEFA Europa League title after a 1-1 score in 120 minutes at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium, Seville on Wednesday.
Rangers’ Aaron Ramsey, who had been brought on specially for the shootout, missed the seventh penalty, and Frankfurt’s Rafael Santos Borre drilled the last penalty into the corner to decide the title.
The game took place after a boiling hot day in Seville, which saw an estimated 120,000 fans from both sides and ugly incidents among the supporters, with chairs and bottles thrown.
The first half was a relatively even affair as neither side wanted to commit any errors, although Eintracht had the best chance when Ansgar Knauff’s effort was pushed wide by Rangers keeper Allan McGregor, while at the other end, John Lundstram saw an effort comfortably tipped over the bar.
Rangers took the lead in the 56th minute when Tuta slipped to collect a back header, allowing Joe Aribo to burst through and score with a low shot into the bottom corner.
The jubilation of the Scottish fans lasted 13 minutes before Santos Borre drifted between two defenders to equalize with a near-post header, just moments after Daichi Kamada had fired over with just McGregor to beat.
Eintracht went looking for a winning goal with Jens Petter Hauge firing just over following a pullback, before Filip Kostic’s cross to the far post failed to find a final touch with McGregor struggling to make up his ground.
Extra-time saw the game become increasingly stretched as the heat and the tension began to take its toll on the players, although it was 15 minutes of ‘oooh’ and ‘ahhs’ rather than clear chances.
The second period of extra-time began with Borna Barisic firing straight at Kevin Trapp, while Adjin Hrustic dragged a shot wide of McGregor’s far post, before Rangers brought Ramsey on for the impending penalties.
The shootout nearly wasn’t needed as Kent saw Trapp make a great save when he looked certain to net the winner for Rangers, and Davis’ follow-up was deflected wide at the last moment.
Angelino’s late strike helps Leipzig edge Rangers in Europa League
German outfit RB Leipzig beat Glasgow Rangers 1-0 in Thursday’s Europa League’s semifinals thanks to Angelino’s last-gasp goal.
The Red Bull started highly motivated on home soil and pressed Rangers onto the back foot from the starting whistle.
Leipzig dominated possession but lacked in ideas to overcome Rangers’ well-positioned defense.
Hence the hosts had to take a goalless stalemate into the halftime as shots from Christopher Nkunku, Konrad Laimer and Angelino got blocked from promising positions in the first 30 minutes.
After the restart, Rangers started brightly and created the first clear-cut chance of the game in the 49th minute when Ryan Kent danced through Leipzig’s defense before pulling wide from a tight angle.
Leipzig responded well four minutes later after Rangers goalkeeper Allan McGregor had to palm away Nkunku’s hammer from 17 meters.
The hosts handed over control but produced better opportunities and Leipzig should have opened the scoring in the 70th minute but Nkunku couldn’t find the empty goal after rounding McGregor following a through ball from Dominik Szoboszlai.
Rangers kept it bowling and countered in the 78th minute as Kent tested Leipzig custodian Peter Gulacsi from the edge of the box.
The goal was scored at the other end of the pitch as Rangers cleared a corner into the path of Angelino, who volleyed the ball past McGregor into the bottom left corner in the 85th minute.
With the result, Leipzig take a narrow 1-0 advantage into the second leg at Ibrox next Thursday.
“It’s only 1-0. We know that at 1-0 going back to Ibrox we are still in it. We are going to be at it from the first whistle,” said Rangers’ captain James Tavernier.
“Glasgow Rangers had a clear game plan and made life hard, but we got the result we wanted. We know it’s only half-time in tie and we need to maintain our focus and performance for the return leg,” said Leipzig midfielder Tyler Adams.
