Newcastle United claimed a 2-1 win away to Tottenham to climb up to fourth in the table.
Callum Wilson opened the scoring in the 31st minute after a VAR check confirmed he hadn’t fouled Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris. Miguel Almiron doubled the lead 10 minutes later after beating Lloris at his near post.
Harry Kane pulled a goal back for his side 10 minutes into the second half, but Newcastle held on for a win that confirms them as top-four candidates.
Aston Villa reacted positively to Steven Gerrard’s sacking in midweek with a 4-0 thumping of Brentford.
Danny Ings scored twice as Villa led 3-0 after just 14 minutes, with Leon Bailey adding the other goal, and the game was as good as over when Ollie Watkins netted the fourth just before the hour.
Leicester City built on their 2-0 win at home to Leeds United in midweek with a 4-0 win away to Wolves thanks to some clinical finishing.
Leicester had only five shots all game, but their first four efforts ended up in the back of the net, with Youri Tielemans and Harvey Barnes scoring after eight and 18 minutes, while James Maddison and Jamie Vardy netted in the second half. Wolves had over 20 shots, but once again failed to find the net.
Leeds United slipped into the relegation zone after a 3-2 defeat at home to Fulham. Rodrigo Moreno put Leeds ahead after 20 minutes, but Aleksandr Mitrovic leveled just six minutes later and Bobby Reid (74 minutes) and Willian (83) sealed the win before Crysencio Summerville’s late consolation for Leeds.
On Saturday, two goals in the last 10 minutes resolved the 1-1 draw between Chelsea and Manchester United, with Jorginho netting an 87th-minute penalty for Chelsea, before Casemiro’s injury-time header saved a point for United in a game where Cristiano Ronaldo’s absence for disciplinary reasons captured the pre-game headlines.
Two more goals from Erling Haaland put Manchester City on the way to a 3-1 win at home to Brighton.
Leandro Trossard’s low drive after 53 minutes gave Brighton hope of a comeback, but Kevin de Bruyne made it 3-1 with 15 minutes left to play.

Clinical Manchester United beat Spurs in Premier League
Manchester United produced arguably their best performance of the season to defeat Tottenham 2-0 at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
Tottenham went into the game in third place in the Premier League, but were outclassed by United, who opened the scoring through Fred in the 47th minute, and should have been out of sight by the time Bruno Fernandes added their second, with Spurs keeper Hugo Lloris making a string of magnificent saves.
Darwin Nunez’s 22nd-minute goal was enough for Liverpool to beat West Ham to build on their weekend victory over Manchester City.
The Uruguayan headed home a cross from the left and was unlucky to see another effort bounce back off the post, although Liverpool also had a let-off when Jarrod Bowen’s penalty was well saved by Alisson.
Goalkeepers David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga were on top form with a string of excellent saves to ensure the southwest London derby between Brentford and Chelsea ended in a 0-0 draw.
Chelsea had more chances than the home side, but a draw was a fair result, with both keepers at their best.
Newcastle United moved to fifth in the table thanks to Miguel Almiron’s 31st-minute strike giving them a 1-0 win at home to Everton.
Newcastle peppered the Everton goal, while Everton failed to have a shot on target all game.
Wednesday also saw Southampton take a 1-0 win away to Bournemouth thanks to Che Adams’ ninth-minute goal. The result is Bournemouth’s first defeat under Gary O’Neil, but will ease the pressure on Saints coach Ralph Hasenhuttl.
Spurs sink Everton to keep title dreams alive
Harry Kane fired home from the penalty spot to boost Tottenham’s Premier League title charge in a 2-0 win over Everton on Saturday evening.
It wasn’t a classic by any means, but Tottenham had more chances, despite Everton also having their options before the break.

Arsenal cement top spot as Liverpool held in Premier League again
Arsenal sounded out a warning that they have to be considered serious title candidates in the Premier League this season with a 3-1 win at home to Tottenham on Saturday.
Although the game was level 1-1 at halftime after Harry Kane’s penalty canceled out Thomas Partey’s opener for Arsenal, Mikel Arteta’s side dominated after the break.
A defensive mix-up allowed Gabriel Jesus to put Arsenal back in front four minutes into the second half, and their task was made easier in the 61st minute when Tottenham right back Emerson was sent off for a bad challenge.
Granit Xhaka assured the points for Arsenal with a powerful shot in the 68th minute and they now have a four-point lead at the top of the table, as Manchester City will play neighbors Manchester United on Sunday.
Leandro Trossard scored a hat-trick for Brighton as Roberto de Zerbi began his rein as coach with a 3-3 draw away to Liverpool.
Brighton started magnificently and only fine work by Liverpool keeper Alisson stopped it from being more than 2-0 after 17 minutes, as Liverpool’s defense struggled with Brighton’s excellent attacking play.
Roberto Firmino pulled a goal back for Liverpool before the break and then equalized 10 minutes into the second half, and an own goal from Adam Webster after some poor keeping from Roberto Sanchez put Liverpool ahead.
The game still had one last surprise when Trossard found space at the far post to equalize with seven minutes left to play.
Conor Gallagher was a hero on loan at Crystal Palace last season, but he broke his former club’s hearts with a 90th-minute winner for Chelsea to give Graham Potter a win in his first league game in charge.
Odsonne Edouard put Palace ahead after just seven minutes, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang equalizing in the 38th minute, and the game looked set for a draw before Gallagher’s winner.

Preview – Plenty of interest in Premier League weekend
The games between Chelsea and Liverpool, Manchester United and Leeds United and Brighton and Crystal Palace have all been put off due to the lack of police, and while new Chelsea coach, Graham Potter will be grateful for more time to work with his squad and Brighton will be able to find a replacement for Potter, the postponements will only lead to further congest an already crowded fixture calendar.
Two matches are played on Friday night with Aston Villa faced with the prospect of giving a debut to 19-year-old keeper Filip Marschall unless Emi Martinez recovers from the illness that saw him miss training on Thursday.
Just one win in six games has left Villa just one place above the relegation zone and increased the pressure on coach Steven Gerrard ahead of the home game against Southampton, who are more than capable of taking all three points from Villa Park.
Nottingham Forest and Fulham play a match between two recently promoted sides, with Forest still smarting at how they allowed Bournemouth to come back from 2-0 down to win 2-3 in the last game at the City Ground.
While Forrest have struggled, despite (or maybe because of) making 20 summer signings, Fulham have looked solid on their return to the top-flight and Aleksandar Mitrovic is showing that he can repeat his goalscoring feats from the Championship in the elite.
Saturday’s game between Wolverhampton and Manchester City pits the league’s tightest defense against its best attack, and the big question is whether Wolves will be able to keep the prolific Erling Haaland quiet.
Man City’s lack of pace out wide means they sometimes find it hard to break down packed, narrow defenses and Wolves will defend deep and look to play on the break.
Newcastle coach Eddie Howe faces his former club when Bournemouth visit St James’ Park. Newcastle are without the injured duo of Allan Saint-Maximin and Bruno Guimaraes as they look to turn decent performances into wins.

Leicester travel to unbeaten Spurs with just one win from six games and with coach Brendan Rodgers starting to be seriously questioned.
Brentford striker Ivan Toney got his first England call-up on Thursday and will look to celebrate when his side entertain Arsenal. Finally, Everton play at home to West Ham, with Frank Lampard’s side still searching for their first win of the campaign, while West Ham are probably still smarting from the controversial disallowed goal that saw them denied a late equalizer away to Chelsea two weeks ago.
EPL preview – Man Utd look to build as Liverpool seek to bounce back
Manchester United will be hoping to build on their Monday’s 2-1 win over Liverpool when they travel to play Southampton on Saturday in the fourth round of English Premier League.
Casemiro is in line for his debut after signing from Real Madrid and will slot in ahead of the defense, while Harry Maguire will once again be watching from the subs bench – probably sitting close to Cristiano Ronaldo as Marcos Rashford leads the attack.
Southampton have improved in recent games, and United will have to be wary of their dangerman, Che Adams, who has netted four goals in the past week.
Liverpool’s defeat at Old Trafford left a lot of questions to be answered, but the fact is that most of the answers can be supplied by a look at an injury list that includes, Diogo Jota, Thiago Alcantara, Josep Matip, Nabi Keita, Ibrahima Konate, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Curtis Jones, with Darwin Nunez still suspended.
Recently promoted Bournemouth could offer some respite, with the newly promoted side traveling to Anfield after maulings by Manchester City and Arsenal, and Liverpool boss, Jurgen Klopp will probably give a start to youngster Fabio Carvalho as he looks for the first win of the season.
Manchester City dropped two points in a thriller away to Newcastle United last week, and Pep Guardiola’s men now face Crystal Palace, led by old boy Patrick Viera.
Palace stunned City at the Ethiad Stadium with a 2-0-win last season, but a repeat is unlikely, although Guardiola will want his defense to tighten up against the threat of Wilfred Zaha in the visitors’ attack.
Arsenal have a great chance to build on their best start to a season since 2004 when they entertain Fulham.
Mikel Arteta’s side is currently playing some attractive football and has discovered the confidence that looks to have limited them in the past, but Fulham travel across London unbeaten on their return to the top-flight, with Marco Silva building a team that is well-organized at the back and has a big threat in attack in the powerful form of Aleksandr Mitrovic.
Chelsea need to get back to winning ways and will be optimistic of three points against Leicester, who have had a poor start to the season. Leicester’s problems are not helped by Wesley Fofana’s desire to move to Stamford Bridge (meaning he won’t be part of their squad) and an injury down over playmaker, James Maddison.
Jesse Marsch has turned Leeds United into a terrier-like rival (as Chelsea can testify) and it will be interesting to see how their ‘in your face’ style works away to a stylish, if slightly goal-shy Brighton.
Saturday’s final game is another challenge for Everton, who sneaked a late point against Nottingham Forrest last week, but still look relegation candidates, with an injury list including Yerry Mina, Ben Godfrey, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Andros Townsend.
Brentford pose another major threat to Frank Lampard’s side with Ivan Toney the main threat to the Everton back four.
Sunday’s three matches see West Ham United look for their first points of the season when they visit an irregular Aston Villa, who have not been helped by injury to Diego Carlos.
Newcastle United could have Alexander Isak available to make his debut for their visit to Wolves, who have now gone 10 league games without a win. If available, Isak would slot in for Callum Wilson, who is out with a calf injury.
Finally, Tottenham’s visit to Nottingham Forrest could provide plenty of work for Forrest keeper, Dean Henderson, who has so far been impressive at the start of his loan spell from Old Trafford.

Chelsea complained about fouls before both of Tottenham’s goals, and Thomas Tuchel’s frustration appeared to spill over at the final whistle when he seemed to squeeze Spurs’ coach Antonio Conte’s hand extra hard in their post-game handshake and refuse to let go, promoting Conte to react angrily and for them both to be shown red cards.
Earlier in the day, Nottingham Forest claimed their first Premier League win in 23 years as Taiwo Awoniyi scrambled the ball home to give them a 1-0 win at home to West Ham.

Manchester City cruised past Bournemouth 4-0 to maintain their impressive 100 percent start.

Brighton and Newcastle United drew a tactical game 0-0, with Brighton having slightly more of the play, while Fulham defended well to draw 0-0 away to Wolves, and the newly-promoted side would have won if striker Aleksander Mitrovic had scored an 81st-minute penalty.
Southampton scored two goals in the last 20 minutes to come back from 2-0 down at home to Leeds United, who had led thanks to Rodrigo Moreno’s goals in the 46th and 60th minute. Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic continued the form that saw him score 43 goals in the Championship last season, when he put his side ahead in the 32nd minute.
Liverpool’s new signing Darwin Nunez came off the bench in the second half and leveled with a back-heel just after the hour, but Mitrovic’s second of the game – this time from the penalty spot – after he had been fouled, put Fulham back in front with just 18 minutes left to play.

New signing Marc Cucurella made an impressive Chelsea debut in the second half, shortly before the game was again stopped in the 85th minute, this time for a medical emergency in the crowd.
Play resumed minutes later but there was no way back for a disappointing Everton despite another 10 minutes injury time.
